The Andrew Luck era in Indianapolis has come to an end.
The former first overall pick announced his retirement on Saturday during the Colts’ preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Luck, who turns 30 in September, won NFL Comeback Player of the Year for his performance last season. He missed the entire 2017 campaign while recovering from shoulder surgery.
Last season, Luck played in all 16 games, producing 4,593 passing yards, 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Luck was the top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Stanford University alum played 86 regular-season games, producing 23,671 passing yards, 171 passing touchdowns and 83 interceptions. He also collected 1,590 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.
Luck’s retirement comes at a tough time for the Colts. Indianapolis was considered a playoff contender and an AFC South division favorite this offseason.
With Luck out of the picture, the Colts will rely on backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Luck’s replacement served as the Colts’ starting quarterback throughout the majority of the 2017 season.
The Colts also have Chad Kelly and Phillip Walker, an Elizabeth native, at the quarterback position.
Social media had mixed reactions to Luck’s shocking announcement. While some lamented his “what if” career, others questioned the timing of his retirement announcement. The majority of the commentary revolved around Luck’s career never living up to its potential.
