Marblehead High's Remote Shift 'The Right Decision': Patch PM

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Today is Monday, Oct. 26. These are the stories we've been covering on the North Shore and across Massachusetts.

Marblehead Superintendent of Schools John Buckey said he was happy with the way the high school switched from hybrid to fully remote learning on Monday even if he is frustrated with the reason the district had to do it.

Buckey, in consultation with school, town, public safety and health officials, decided to move all high school students to remote learning on Sunday after Marblehead police broke up a large house party Friday night at which they said teens were not social distancing, not wearing masks, sharing drinks and where they scattered when police arrived as to not be identified.

"It's an opportunity to educate," Buckey said. "That's the business we're in."

Rink Closures Cause 'Disappointment And Dejection' On North Shore

Matt Sachar drove to hockey practice this past Thursday looking forward to another fun night of learning on the ice similar to most others in the Salem-Swampscott Youth Hockey Association since rinks reopened for tryouts nearly two months ago.

By the time he walked into the building, however, the SSYA president found out that he was going to have to be the bearer of some very unfortunate news for his players after the state announced that starting the next day all hockey rinks were to close for at least two weeks due to coronavirus outbreaks the state said could be traced back to games and gatherings surrounding youth hockey.

Waltham Teacher Runs NYC Virtual Marathon To Raise Awareness

Justin Fillios wasn't yet taller than his mother when he helped her finish one of her first marathons in Maine. As she rounded the bend, Justin in his baggy jeans and oversized white tank top spotted her and jumped into the race next to her, grabbing her fuel belt and putting it around his own waist and then grabbing his mother's hand as they crossed they finish line together.

That was some 30 marathons ago, but the image and the symbolism of her child taking her hand to help her finish a challenge has not left Sandee Landon. Saturday, more than nine months after she tragically lost her son Justin, Landon will be running the TCS NYC Virtual Marathon in his honor, and to put a spotlight on the needs of people with mental health issues.
