California Coronavirus: Latest Updates On Cases, Orders, Closures

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of April 12.

CALIFORNIA — As Californians head into a holiday weekend, it's one that will surely be imprinted on the minds of the state residents like none other before. There will be no scrambling to get to church services, no mad rush for the Easter eggs at the park.

It's now been more than three weeks that the state has been sheltering in place and government officials say we're still weeks away from the anticipated peak of the heath crisis related to the coronavirus. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday asked residents to continue following the orders as long as possible, particularly during the holiday weekend.

"The future happens inside of us," he said during his daily briefing on the novel coronavirus. "It's decisions, not conditions, that will determine the fate and future of this modeling. It's your individual decisions."

Newsom and state Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris acknowledged at a press briefing this week that abiding by state and regional shelter-in-place orders can cause people to feel lonelier, more anxious or depressed and more stressed.

"We recognize, I recognize, we all, I think, recognize the nature of this moment and I just want folks to know that staying at home doesn't mean you're alone," he said. "That as a state, we are here to do what we can to support you and to be there at a time of need."

The worst of California's expected surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations has not yet arrived, and Newsom said Monday that the state has continued expanding its hospital capacity to treat the future patients. That surge is expected to hit mid-to-late May.

There were 557,300 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 22,079 deaths as of Sunday evening, according to Johns Hopkins University. 675 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.

Newsom announced last weekend that the state has launched a one-stop website to streamline donations or sales of critical supplies needed to fight the novel coronavirus outbreak. The covid19supplies.ca.gov site lists 13 in-demand items, from ventilators to hand sanitizer, needed by hospitals and first responders around the state.

Individuals and companies can donate, sell or offer to manufacture the supplies, Newsom said during his daily noon briefing.

The governor said the goal was to organize what has become an overwhelming outpouring of donations in recent weeks, and also streamline offers to manufacture needed supplies.

"These actions marshal the generosity and innovative spirit of Californians to help us achieve two essential goals: getting more lifesaving supplies into our health care system and increasing our testing capacity," Newsom said.
