REDWOOD CITY – An investigation is underway into an in-custody death at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City, authorities said.

The inmate was found unresponsive during a housing pod security check just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The inmate received medical treatment including CPR but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said an initial investigation indicated the inmate died of natural causes.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will release the inmate’s identity after their family has been notified.
