Severe thunderstorm watch issued for eastern South Dakota

Severe thunderstorm warning for eastern South Dakota until 1 a.m.

Sioux Falls and most of southeast South Dakota have an enhanced risk of severe weather on Saturday night, the National Weather Service says.

Most of eastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, parts of northwestern Iowa and southwestern Minnesota, are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m. Sunday.

Latest warnings:

Severe thunderstorms could produce two-inch-sized hail, 80-mph winds and even an isolated tornado, the National Weather Service said Saturday. The risk of severe storms is expected to be the greatest between 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday for the region.

Some of the cities in the enhanced risk area include Sioux Falls, Chamberlain, Mitchell, Huron and Brookings. Areas at a slight risk for severe weather include Yankton, Watertown, Redfield and Pierre.

Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of central, north-central and northeast South Dakota until 9 p.m. 

Damaging winds, large hail and even a few tornadoes are possible for parts of eastern South Dakota on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019.

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 3 a.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 61. South southeast wind around 10 mph becoming north northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 77. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming south southeast after midnight.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 83. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Monday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. South southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. South wind around 5 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 60.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 78.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 56.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83.
