Seattle Parks and Recreation holds an open house today from 6-8 p.m. at Golden Gardens Bathhouse, 8409 Seaview Ave. N.W., to provide information and discuss two new rules for Golden Gardens Park in the Ballard neighborhood.

The new rules — enacted under the city’s administrative rule-making authority — relate to the management of traffic and parking, and prevention of illegal fires at the park.

For the past seven years, the city has grappled with traffic jams and an overcrowded parking lot, which makes it difficult for emergency vehicles to navigate.

There also has been an alarming increase in illegal beach fires. Park officials want to make it clear to the public what can and cannot be burned and offer some solutions to relieve the traffic congestion.

Also, park officials will conduct a weeklong cleanup from next Tuesday through June 14. The cleanup will include the temporary removal of fire rings from the beach.

Fare increase

The newly approved ferry-fare increase by Washington State Ferries goes into effect tomorrow.

The state Transportation Commission last month approved the 6 percent ferry-fare increase.

For example, the fare for a car and driver from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, Seattle to Bremerton, or Edmonds to Kingston will be $10.60 and will be collected each way. The passenger-only fare, collected only westbound, will be $6.10.

The fare increase will generate an estimated $4.8 million in 2006 and $4.9 million in 2007.
