Sports journalist and activist Jemele Hill married fellow Michigan State University graduate Ian Wallace in California over the weekend.

Hill and Wallace exchanged vows Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California, which happens to be the site of their first date, according to Essence.

“We pulled up Monarch Beach and I said to Jemele, 'I've been here before. This looks so familiar,'" Wallace told Essence. "Once we realized this was where we had our first date, I was super sold. I thought, 'Oh my God, this is such a perfect full-circle story.'"

The couple recently had moved to Los Angeles and decided to have the wedding in California instead of Detroit – where they both are from. However, the couple hired Detroit-based and black-owned vendors for their wedding in an effort to pay homage to their hometown.

The couple met while attending Michigan State University. They were engaged in 2018. The hashtag #fromMSUtoIdo was birthed out of the couple’s engagement.

A no cell phone policy prevented guests from posting pictures from the wedding on social media, however, Hill did tweet a few after Essence released an exclusive interview.

“Some of my friends that are married have been texting me the last few days and they all say, ‘take a moment to enjoy the day,’” Hill tells Essence.
