Woman, 26, who has transformed 200,000 smiles reveals how she created a booming teeth whitening empire

  • Alison Egan founded Sparkling White Smile after dreaming of teeth whitening
  • The 26-year-old couldn't find any whitening that was affordable
  • She launched her business to whiten teeth for just $300 instead of $1,000
  • Sparkling White Smile has now transformed 200,000 smiles with whitening

A 26-year-old woman who had a dream about being able to afford cosmetic teeth whitening has turned her idea into a hugely successful business that has now whitened 200,000 smiles across Australia for a fraction of the typical dentist cost.

Alison Egan, from Sydney, came up with the idea for Sparkling White Smile when she was just 21 years old and decided she wanted her own teeth whitened.

But when she couldn't find the procedure available for under $1,000, Alison knew she wanted to do something about this - and now she and her business have whitened thousands of teeth for around $300 per treatment.

'I begged my parents for three days to help me out with the purchase of equipment when I was 21 and they finally agreed to loan me $10,000,' Alison told FEMAIL.

'I spent time with dentists who were willing to teach me the ins and outs. I literally studied everything I could about teeth whitening; it's a non-qualification course, so it worked with what I was doing already as a health professional.'

While she was studying nursing, Alison set up her business idea and through word of mouth, she started to get her first clients.

'It was slow progress at first as it was spreading through word of mouth,' she said.

'But now, as a business we are whitening the teeth of over 500 people per week - and it's growing.'

Alison said they also have the Ultra White treatment ($500), which is done across two sessions and makes your teeth between 7 and 14 shades lighter.

The treatments incorporate peroxide gels, a laser accelerator lamp to rapidly activate the whitening gel and of course, their highly trained and dedicated technicians.

'It's hard to estimate what the business is currently worth in the economic climate, but the amount of opportunities and growth that have presented themselves to us through COVID-19 has been incredible,' Alison said.

'The demand for beauty services after such a long period of isolation has been overwhelming.'

According to Alison, the fact that Sparkling White Smile is a mobile service makes it much more accessible for busy men and women:

'We do a lot of our whitening in the evenings after work,' she told FEMAIL.

'Some 30 per cent of our customer base is now men, too, because I think they like the idea that they can whiten their teeth from the comfort of their own home.'

'It's not always going to be easy, but at the end of the day when you look back on everything, you really feel like you have accomplished something great,' she said.

'I genuinely love my job, and love making people smile every day. Do something you love, and it will never feel like work.'

What is teeth whitening and how does it work?

* Teeth whitening involves bleaching the teeth to lighten their colour. After treatment, the teeth look a few shades whiter, but not usually bright white.

* Teeth whitening is an optional procedure - it is very rarely a necessity.

* Whitening products typically use the chemicals hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

* The bleach soaks through the tooth's enamel top layer and into the dentine, the main part of the inside of the tooth which is slightly softer than the enamel.

* The bleach reacts with the coloured molecules that cause discolouration. The dentine then becomes lighter and the teeth look whiter. Bleach can also make the enamel surface more reflective, which looks whiter too.

* Teeth can become discoloured through drinking red wine, tea, coffee and Coca Cola.

* Whitening is generally successful and can last for several years, but it isn't permanent: for example, tea, coffee and red wine can stain your teeth again.

* The most common side-effects, which are often temporary, include tooth sensitivity, especially from power bleaching, and irritation of the gums.
