UTC Music Department Presents Trumpet Ensemble Nov. 7

  • Wednesday, October 23, 2013

The UTC Music Department will present UTC’s Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Erika Schafer, on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m.  The performance will take place in the UTC Fine Arts Center, Roland Hayes Concert Hall, 752 Vine St.  Admission is free and open to the general public.

The concert will include Three Madrigals by Luca Marenzio, “Revecy Venir du Printans” by Claude Le Jeune, and Thomas Vautor’s “Sweet Suffolk Owl”. UTC’s Trumpet Ensemble is made up of Timothy Clark, Taylor Franklin, Zachary Langley, Justin Wilson, and Nicholas Wysong. This year, they will be joined by two student brass quintets.

UTC’s Trumpet Ensemble will be performing three madrigals by Luca Marenzio; “Togli, dolce ben mio,” “Crudele Acerba,” and “Spring Returns.” In the late sixteenth century, the blossoming of Italian madrigal led composers to seek new modes of musical expression to reflect more closely in tone the words with which they were set. Marenzio’s five part love song, “Togli, dolce ben mio” will be followed with “Crudele Acerba,” which is taken from the poetic works of Francesco Petrarca, and vividly describes the languishing torment of one whom death has left bereft. The composer’s interpretation is rich with extraordinary harmonies, surprising progressions, and tortured melodic twists. It is followed by “Spring Returns,” which brings with it a natural progression of rebirth. Claude Le Jeune’s “Revecy Venir du Printans,” which translates as “Behold the Return of Spring,” is a carefree piece full of uncluttered, melodic, longer notes. These are then followed by “Sweet Suffolk Owl” which delivers an incisive melody and dramatic intensity, delivered by subtle dynamic shadings.

Previously featured soloist of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., Dr. Erika L. Schafer is now in her sixth year as Trumpet Instructor and Assistant Director of Bands at UTC. She teaches trumpet lessons, directs the Jazz Band and Trumpet Ensemble, and is the Assistant Director of the Marching Band and Pep Band. She also performs regularly with the Chattanooga Symphony and the UTC Faculty Brass Quintet and, is a founding member of New Dischord, a Chattanooga-based performing ensemble featuring new music in collaboration with other artists.
