GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- A group with the authority to redraw the lines of county commissioner districts will begin its once-a-decade review next week.
The county Apportionment Commission is scheduled to start its work at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14, in the third-floor conference room in the county administration building, 1101 Beach St., Flint.
The commission is comprised of county Clerk-Register John Gleason, county Prosecutor David Leyton, county Treasurer Deb Cherry, county Democratic Party Chairman Dan Mollanen, and county Republican Party Chairman Fred MacFortner.
The county’s estimated population as of July 2019 was 405,813, down from 425,790 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Apportionment commissioners will likely have to consider how to change county commissioner district lines to reflect where people are living in the county compared to 10 years ago.
In 2011, the Apportionment Commission considered but did not approve a suggestion from former Clerk Michael Carr to reduce the size of the county commission from nine to five members.
Monday’s agenda includes no such discussion items.
In addition to electing a chairperson for the commission, the agenda includes a presentation from county Geographic Information System Department Director Ken Koleda.
Gleason said Friday, June 11, that he also expects the Apportionment Commission could vote on what software to use to map out county commissioner districts.
