Oklahoma Film Industry: These blockbusters were filmed in our state
Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and more – Spotting a Hollywood superstar is getting easier in Oklahoma.
Several Hollywood movies are currently being filmed at locations across our state. We gathered a list of movies that were filmed in various locations in the Sooner State, some of them, you may not have known were filmed here:
Twister
The 1996 blockbuster was filed in various locations in Wakita, a town in northern Oklahoma. You can also visit the Twister Museum there to see movie memorabilia.
Rain Man
Did you know the Oscar-Winning “Rain Man” filmed several scenes around our state, including El Reno and Guthrie? According to TravelOK.com, in the movie, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise embark on a road trip and wind up at the Big 8 Motel. The location for that scene was in El Reno.
Fans of the movie can still visit the location of the clinic where Charlie takes Raymond on the corner of Oklahoma and Division Streets in Guthrie, and the W.S. Kelly Gas Station where the pair stop to make a phone call, located in Cogar about 10 miles south of El Reno.
August: Osage County
An all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor and more gathered in the Oklahoma towns of Pawhuska and Bartlesville to film the 2013, award-winning film “August: Osage County.”
Shots of Tenkiller State Park can also be seen in the emotional movie about family and returning to your roots.
Elizabethtown
In this 2005 film, Orlando Bloom’s character takes a cross-country road trip, during which you can catch a glimpse of the Cherokee Trading Post & Travel Mart in Calumet before he visits the Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, which Kirsten Dunst’s character claims is her “favorite tree in the world.”
To The Wonder
The 2012 film starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams filmed several scenes at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Pawhuska and the Pawnee Bill Ranch Historic Site & Museum in Pawnee. The film also featured Bartlesville, including the Bartlesville Community Center.
The Outsiders
The popular 1983 movie starring Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez was filmed in various locations in northeastern Oklahoma, including Owasso, Skiatook and Tulsa. It’s based on Oklahoma author S.E. Hinton’s novel.
