An advanced molecular and diagnostic entre for fungi will be set up at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar.
The Indian Council of Medical Research has identified the laboratory of Mycology, Department of Microbiology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar for the facility.
The advanced molecular diagnostic centre for fungi will come up at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore and works for it will be completed in three years.

The main objectives of the centre will be to provide reference services like molecular identification of invasive fungal infections, antifungal susceptibility and detection and control of fungal outbreaks.
As per AIIMS, Bhubaneswar officials, the centre will also assist other institutes in the region for detection and control of fungal infections.
The institute will also train physicians and laboratory scientists in the field of clinical mycology, surveillance and communicate results to national reference for policy formulation.
The centre will also play a crucial role in antifungal therapeutic drug monitoring, AIIMS Bhubaneswar said in a release. A multidisciplinary team of 9 faculty members consisting of a mycologist, pathologist. physicians. surgeon. Intensivist, pharmacologist and a haematologist will be working to manage suspected fungal infections and conduct research on fungal infections at the institute.
In addition to diagnostic laboratory services, the team shall also provide training, advice and support to doctors treating suspected fungal infections in east India. “ Currently, the recruitment of a scientist, two technicians and a multitasking staff is over. The process of procurement of high-end equipment and renovation of the existing laboratory is going on,” the release added.
