Rough surf, rain in forecast this week for Volusia County area

Winds gusting from the west up to 35 mph Sunday blew a paddle boarder into the ocean, but he was quickly reached by rescuers on jet skis without incident, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue officials.

The forecast for the National Weather Service in Melbourne calls for rough surf to continue in the coming days. Beach officials warn swimmers to stay in water where a lifeguard is present.

As rough surf continues to pound the east coast of Florida, the outlook for the Volusia County area in the coming week has the possibility of rainy days and nights.

A 50% chance showers and thunderstorms will occur after noon Monday with a high of 86. The night will drop to around 74 with a 50% chance of rain.

The likelihood of rain falls to 30% Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms expected after noon. Expect a high around 87 and low near 69 — the coolest expected night of the week.

There's no expected need for an umbrella Wednesday, with a high of 79 under partly cloudy skies. Expect a low of 71 overnight.

But chances of getting wet return Thursday and Friday, with a 50% likelihood of precipitation both days. Forecasters expect a high of 83 and low around 72 both days.

And rain is forecast to close out the week, with a 50% possibility Saturday. Expect partly sunny skies with a high of 82 and low of 71.
