CNN Films is set to premiere an anthology of short documentaries this summer in partnership with minority-owned studio and prodco Scheme Engine.

Each 25-minute title focuses on a slice of Americana. The films will be introduced by CNN’s Anderson Cooper (Anderson Cooper 360⁰), and premiere on TV and livestream via CNNgo.

The first film to premiere is 58 Hours: The Baby Jessica Story, from director Mark Bone.

Airing July 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the short (pictured) revisits the story of Jessica McClure, who fell into a well while playing in a relative’s backyard in Midland, Texas on October 14, 1987. A captivated nation watched on live television while rescuers worked around the clock for 58 hours to save her.

After, CNN will air Super Reviewers: Rate, Review, Repeat, which sees directors Yu Gu and Arianna LaPenne wade into the subculture of people who leave hundreds, or even thousands of reviews a year at online websites, sparking feuds and affecting reputations.

On Aug. 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, CNN will premiere another set of films. First up is The Bunker Boom: Better Safe Than Sorry directed by LaPenne. The film travels to xPoint, a subterranean neighborhood in rural South Dakota that is home to a large residential community of “preppers,” people who live “off the grid.”

Finally, from director Charles Todd, Lessons From the Water: Diving With a Purpose (w/t) tells the story of Black scuba divers who formed the organization Diving with a Purpose, with the goal of restoring the nearly 500 voyages shipwrecked during the slave trade to the historical record.

“Each director brought a thoughtful and unique vision to explore ‘community’ in their films” said Alexandra Hannibal, director, program development for CNN, and an executive producer for each of the four film shorts, in a release.  “We are delighted to collaborate with Scheme Engine for this anthology and to offer these talented filmmakers the opportunity to share their work with our television and digital audiences.”
