Indie movies such as “Marriage Story,” “Uncut Gems,” “The Lighthouse,” and “The Farewell” have had a strong presence so far on the awards circuit, and yet they barely skim the surface when it comes to great works of independent cinema this year that deserve to be taken seriously at the Oscars. An Oscar nomination for Harmony Korine? Never going to happen, but movies like “The Beach Bum” and “Midsommar” have such strong craftsmanship on display that to not even discuss them in the context of Oscar season is to overlook some of the best things about movies in 2019.
