James Breckinridge Barlow, Sr.

Brick Twp. - James Breckinridge Barlow, Sr. 75, passed away on September 16, 2021 after a brief illness. Jim grew up in Brielle and attended The Peddie School in Hightstown where he competed in lacrosse, basketball, and football. His first love, however, was basketball, and he was awarded a four-year scholarship to play while attending St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire.

Jim followed his father into the banking industry and had a successful career in New York City, eventually traveling the world as Senior Vice President of Global Accounts for the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corp. (HSBC). When Jim grew tired of traveling, he settled in his beloved Jersey Shore to become the Director of Business Development at Amboy Bank, a position he held for 20 years. Upon his retirement, Jim worked as a Business Consultant for the Commercial Department of Oceanfirst Bank. He remained there until his death.

Jim was a Jersey Boy through and through. He loved the sea and the sand. Much of his leisure time was spent fishing, boating, sailing, or just relaxing on the Sea Girt beach. He was a member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club and the Spring Lake Golf Club. Jim's love of his community was born out by his commitment to give back, and to do his part to ensure everyone could enjoy what the Jersey Shore offered. Over the span of his career, Jim served as a trustee on the governing boards of many charitable organizations such as Epiphany House, United Way of Monmouth County, Prevention First, Holiday Express, and the Monmouth Park Charity Fund. He also served as president of the Board of Trustees for the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Family & Children's Service. In a professional capacity, Jim was an Officer and Director at Shore Builders Association of NJ, a Life Trustee of the NJ Builders Association and a Corporate Advisor to the Kislak Real Estate Institute at Monmouth University, a member of the Presidents Society at Monmouth University and a member of the Monmouth Business Council.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Florence of Brielle, his brother Dr. Robert Barlow of Syracuse, NY and Woods Hole, MA and his sister, Margaret Lawson of Lakewood, NJ.

He leaves behind his wife, Adele, his sons, James Jr. and his wife Michelle (Stinton), Pearson and his wife Kirstin (Wyka), his step-daughter, Alexandra Luther and her partner, Rob Gordon. And, of course, four beautiful and amazing grandchildren, Ava, Parker, Penn and James III (Breck).

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Jim's loyal dedication to and passion for Monmouth University, the Barlow family requests that gifts be made to The Barlow Family Memorial Scholarship at Monmouth University. Gifts can be made online at: www.monmouth.edu/give by entering "Barlow Family Memorial Scholarship" in the designated field or mailed to Monmouth University, University Advancement, 400 Cedar Avenue, West Long Branch, NJ 07764.
