Amateur baseball roundup: High-powered offense carries South Central past Kimball/White Lake

Amateur baseball district tournaments are underway across the state.

HAYES -- Third-seeded South Central smacked 16 hits to take down No. 2 Kimball/White Lake in a 10-8 win in the District 3B tournament on Sunday.

Jace Faulkner had four hits, including a solo home run, while Aaron Vomacka also hit a solo blast. Blake Boes went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Jaden Frank went 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Christian Schweigert and J.J. Beck both had two hits and an RBI.

Beck, McKnight and Boes combined to allow four earned runs on seven hits and five walks, while McKnight had five strikeouts.

Dylanger Pierson had two hits and two RBIs on a two-run home run for the Nationals. Ethan Gaulke had two RBIs, while Zak Wallner had two hits and an RBI. Devin Deboer, Caden Lenz and Wallner allowed 10 earned runs on 16 hits and five walks. Lenz struck out seven.

South Central (12-6) plays the Plankinton Bankers/Colome winner in the finals at 8 p.m. on July 29 in Chamberlain. Kimball/White Lake plays the Four Corners/Chamberlain winner at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Chamberlain.

Miller/Wessington 6, Wessington Springs 5

HAYES -- Rafael Clemente’s walk-off two-run single allowed Miller/Wessington avoid elimination in a win over Wessington Springs in the District 3B tournament on Sunday.

The ninth-seeded Owls scored four runs in the final two innings, including a go-ahead RBI single by Armando Rodriguez in the top of the ninth.

Clemente went 4-for-5 for the No. 7 Outlaws, while Dalton Vis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Layne Cotton went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Garrett Knox allowed two earned runs on two hits and six walks and struck out five over 7 1/3 innings.

Drew Olinger and Devin Hohn had RBIs for Wessington Springs, while Terek Butterfield allowed three earned runs on 13 hits and struck out six over 8 2/3 innings.

Miller/Wessington (5-14) plays the Plankinton Gold Sox at 8 p.m. Monday in Chamberlain.

South Central 10, Plankinton Gold Sox 6

HAYES -- Plankinton exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth, but South Central fired right back with five in the bottom of the frame to take a District 3B tournament game Saturday.

Blake Boes hit a three-run home run in the eighth for the No. 3 Storm and Rhoss Oliver went deep on a pinch-hit shot during the ensuing at-bat. Boes finished with five RBIs, while Aaron Vomacka had three. Jaden Frank also drove in a run.

Aaron Sundquist, Paul Taggart, Grant Thomas and Frank combined to allow six earned runs on 17 hits and struck out 11.

Jesse Grosdidier went 4-for-5 with an RBI for the sixth-seeded Gold Sox, while Thomas Stange went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Tom Harris went 3-for-5, while Tye Harris had a two-run home run that tied the game in the top of the eighth.

Ryland DeVries took the loss for Plankinton, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks, while striking out 10. The Gold Sox play Miller/Wessington at 8 p.m. Monday in Chamberlain.

Colome 13, Four Corners 10

HAYES -- Fifth-seeded Colome tallied 14 hits to outlast No. 4 Four Corners in the District 3B tournament Saturday.

Jake Luse hit a three-run home run in the eighth that broke an 8-8 tie as the Chaos scored 10 unanswered runs. Ben Connot and Dalton Baker both had three hits and an RBI, while Ethan Vobr had two hits and two RBIs. Jackson Kinzer had two hits and an RBI.

Connot, Vobr and Layton Thieman allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits and 10 walks.

Justin Lester hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run first for Four Corners and finished with six RBIs. Noah Hainy also hit a two-run home run as Four Corners built an 8-1 lead in the third.

Justin Allen, Brad Hand and Andrew Coverdale had two hits apiece. Nathan Hainy and Andrew McCloud both had RBIs. JD Farley and Noah Hainey allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits and struck out 11.

Colome (9-8) played the Plankinton Bankers on Sunday. Four Corners played Chamberlain on Sunday.

Canova 12, Salem 0

COLMAN -- Top-seeded Canova piled on seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away from No. 8 Salem in the District 4B tournament Saturday.

Garrett Gassman launched two home runs and drove in seven runs for the Gang, including a two-run shot to right field to start the scoring in the first inning. Garrett Gassman and Kendall Gassman both went 3-for-3, while Jared Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Trey Krier also went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Canova (19-2), while Justin Miller and Kalub Carmichel both drove in runs. Krier tossed a complete-game shutout, surrendering five hits and striking out five.

Brian Duxbury went 2-for-3 for the Cubs, while Jackson Sadler, Cory Struck and Dylan Klinkhammer combined to allow 10 earned runs on 14 hits.

Canova faces No. 5 Flandreau at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Colman, with the winner advancing to state. Salem (8-15) faces the winner of H/H Gamecocks and Colman at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Colman.

The Cubs defeated H/H Wood Ducks, 8-2, Friday, as Tyler Earls went the distance, striking out seven.

Plankinton Bankers 9, Chamberlain 3

HAYES -- Plankinton scored five runs in the eighth inning to move past Chamberlain in the District 3B tournament Saturday.

Cole Knippling drove in two runs for the top-seeded Bankers, while Trevor Boyd hit a solo home run. Sheldon Grant, Chris Hill, Trevor Salmonson, Josh Geppert and Orric Earl all had RBIs.

Travis Grant tossed a complete game for Plankinton (16-1), allowing one earned run on four hits and struck out 14.

Mike Schwartz went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two run blast in the sixth to briefly give the No. 8 Mallards the lead. Evan Stiener allowed six earned runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings.

Plankinton played Colome Sunday. Chamberlain played Four Corners on Sunday.

Kimball/White Lake 19, Miller/Wessington 4

HAYES -- Kimball/White Lake scored nine runs in the first inning to dispatch Miller/Wessington in the District 3B tournament Saturday.

The Nationals hit four home runs, with two coming from Dylanger Pierson. Caden Lenz and Zak Wallner also went deep. Lenz drove in five runs, while Pierson and Wallner both went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Brian Zeman went 3-for-4 with an RBI for No. 2 Kimball/White Lake, while Trent Wookey went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Dylan Konechne drove in two runs. Wes Kroupa and Jesse Kroupa both had RBIs.

Zeman allowed four earned runs on six hits and struck out seven in six innings.

Cody Cotton drove in two runs for the No. 7 Outlaws, while Garrett Knox and Adam Turner both added RBIs. Josh Engle allowed 13 earned runs on 12 hits in four innings.

Kimball/White Lake played South Central on Sunday.

Platte 8, Parkston 5

ALEXANDRIA -- Hunter Hewitt hit a walk-off three-run home run to center field to send No. 2 Platte past No. 7 Parkston in the District 5B tournament on Friday.

Hewitt finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs for the Killer Tomatoes, while Jarod Severson also knocked in two runs. Ryan Allen went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Michael Buitenbos had two hits. Grant Lang also drove in a run.

Buitenbos and Lang combined to allow five earned runs on 14 hits and struck out 14.

Jeff Harris went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Mudcats, while Dylan Mogck went 3-for-5 and Nathan Boettcher went 2-for-4. Matt Malloy added an RBI. For Parkston (6-17), Jared Donahue and Jake Weber allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits and six walks.

Platte (10-5) played Winner/Colome with a chance to go to state Sunday. Corsica Stickney plays Parkston at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alexandria in an elimination game.

Winner/Colome 19, Corsica-Stickney 9

ALEXANDRIA -- Winner/Colome overcame an early deficit to score seven runs in the sixth inning to roll past Corsica Stickney in the District 5B playoffs on Friday.

With the third-seeded Pheasants leading the No. 6 Horned Frogs 8-7 in the sixth, Lakin Neugebauer hit a grand slam to left field to break the game open.

Austin Calhoon drove in three runs for Winner/Colome (13-4), while Derek Graesser and Reed Harter had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Dillon Lambley, Austin Richey, J.J. Farner, Connor Hopkins and Zach Harter all had RBIs.

Patrick Starr, Reed Harter and Farner combined to allow four earned runs on 14 hits and seven walks, while striking out six.

Kris Menning went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Corsica-Stickney, while Aaron Groeneweg went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kyle Menning drove in two runs and Luke Bamberg and Dillon Turner each had RBIs.

Five Corsica-Stickney pitchers allowed 11 earned runs on 11 hits and 16 walks.

The Pheasants played Platte with a chance to go to state Sunday. Corsica Stickney plays Parkston at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alexandria in an elimination game.
