GENEVA CO., AL (WSFA) - The Geneva County Sheriff's Office is searching for the people responsible for burglarizing Coffee Springs United Methodist Church.

The break-in happened sometime between May 4 and 9, according to Sheriff Tony Helms.

The suspects got away with two flat screen TVs, an audio soundboard and two computers.

The church was in the process of rebuilding after running into several challenges and closing. Membership decreased, and the pastor left the church.

"It breaks your heart not only stealing items, but also stealing from the Lord's house," said Charles Thames, a former church member.

Thames discovered the break-in after checking on the church Monday.

"The back door was opened, and I got out and looked and there were some sound equipment about three pieces there at the door ready. Looked like to be loaded up and hauled away, and I checked two other doors and there were items there also," Thames said.

Helms said there are a couple church break-ins a year. They are all usually in rural areas. In other cases, they've stolen air conditioning units and copper.

"I've always thought there should be a special statute for that. We've had some church burglaries over the years, especially small country churches like that. They struggle for every penny they've got," Helms said.

To help protect your church, authorities encourage you to install surveillance and security systems.

If you have any information on this case or see anything suspicious, call the Geneva County Sheriff's Office at 684-5660 or local police.
