The Charm of Using Vintage Lenses for Video

Have you tried using old film lenses for video creation? There's quite a charm to it.

Coming to you from Filipino wedding video genius, Jason Magbanua, this video talks about the wonders of collecting and actually using vintage film lenses for shooting videos. While the modern lenses exhibit astounding sharpness and incredibly responsive autofocus for "clean, clinical, and sterile" output as Magbanua says, the vintage film lenses render more organic, softer images that give a unique, dreamy vibe to the video. One aspect of it that the video professional loves is how they render skin tone.

Magbanua mentioned that a huge thrill in using them comes from the hunt that it takes to find these old and discontinued lenses. Generally, the more rare the lens is, and of course the better its condition, the higher the cost of acquiring one. He mentioned some of the most coveted ones like the Canon FD 85mm f/1.2L, the Canon 55mm f/1.2, and the FD 24mm f/1.4L. Other notable brands worth checking out are the Soviet Helios lenses and the Japanese-made Takumar lenses. However, good starter lenses for both collectors and those who actually plan to use them are the Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 and the 35mm f/2.8.
