NUH: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, addressing his first rally in Haryana on Monday, took aim at BJP over unemployment and farm distress, saying the Narendra Modi government was only concerned about corporates and big business houses, not the common man.
Campaigning in Nuh for party candidate Aftab Ahmed, Rahul told the crowd that he meant business – “Modi says his mann ki baat (his radio address) every 10th day, I thought I will do kaam ki baat.” Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja and the party’s state in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad were also present at the rally.

Modi and Khattar had only made false promises on tackling corruption, creating jobs and giving farmers minimum support price, said Rahul. “I want to ask you, how many jobs are there in Haryana?” he asked the crowd that roared in approval. In a speech that underlined his party’s main campaign point in Haryana — unemployment — Rahul said many people had lost their jobs, especially in the auto sector, but the PM kept claiming he had fulfilled his promises.
Rahul accused Modi of being a “loudspeaker of Ambani and Adani”. “The government’s idea of notebandi (demonetisation) and GST broke the backbone of poor people,” he said, adding, “You all were standing in queues, did you see Ambani and Adani there? Modi has taken all money from you and put in their pockets.”
He warned that the economy would “further deteriorate” in the next six months which will make the country stand up in one voice against the PM. “Aap logon ko Congress ko jitana hai (you have to make Congress win). You can change the unemployment scenario and the state of farmers by voting for us,” Rahul said.
He added that he was aware of four major demands of Mewat (officially known as Nuh) - Gurgaon-Alwar rail connectivity, upgrading Nuh engineering college to a university, expansion of Kotla lake and Mewat Mahal’s renovation. All demands will be fulfilled if Congress is elected, he said.
Earlier, Selja said for the first time in the state’s history, three incidents of firing had taken place (during the Jat agitation and violence following the Ram Rahim verdict) and Army had to be called in. “It is due to the divisive politics of BJP,” she said.
