If you're ready to hit the sheets on a new bed, Labor Day weekend (and a few days prior) is a particularly good time to snag a discount on a new bed in a box. Almost all of our picks are on sale this year. The discounts aren't bed-breaking, but they are better than we normally see. All prices here are for queen size mattresses. Smaller and larger sizes are also discounted.

Best Mattress Under $1,000

Allswell Supreme Hybrid for $837 ($147 off)

The Allswell Supreme is a great mattress for its price. It comes with individually wrapped coils and a thick plush top, making it both incredibly soft and quite supportive for any sleeping position. It doesn't have the best support right at the edges compared to other high-end mattresses we tried. Use code PERFECTROOM to get the discount on the Supreme.

We also like the Allswell Luxe ($548, $97 off with the code) and the basic Allswell Hybrid ($375), which is the cheapest good mattress we tried. (It also has actual coils along with memory foam.) Though the Hybrid is not currently included in its Labor Day Sale.

Hybrid mattresses blend memory foam with individually wrapped coils, allowing them to offer the body contouring and comfort of memory foam with the support and open airflow of an innerspring mattress. We usually prefer them. In our testing, they tend to offer more support and a small amount of bounce, and don't sink in as much or get as hot. However, not every mattress is the same, and there are some great foam-only options (see below).

  • Casper Hybrid for $1,101 ($194 off): Get this if you're unsure what to get. Casper is the brand that really kicked off the bed-in-a-box trend. These days, there are a lot of great mattresses, but we do think Casper's newer Hybrid Mattress stands out. It's more comfortable and supportive than Casper's all-foam mattresses, and it's a safe, moderately priced choice if you read our guide and just can't decide. Be sure to click on Hybrid on the buy page, as the all-foam comes up first. We should note that Casper redesigned the look of its mattressess and slightly altered their foam blend this year. From what we've read, the Hybrid continues to be a great pick.

  • Leesa Hybrid for $1,424 ($275 off): This is one of our favorite mattresses. It's not quite as luxurious as the Midnight Luxe, but it's still a great choice for a little bit less money.

  • Brooklyn Bedding Hybrid for $749 ($250 off): This is a great option if you like firmness. I've slept on this bed for a couple years now, and it remains my favorite firm bed. Use the code LABORDAY25 at checkout for the discount.

  • Birch Natural Mattress for $1,299 ($200 off): It's a bit more eco-friendly. Use code LDS200 to get this deal on the eco-friendly Birch mattress, made by Helix (the company that makes our favorite mattress). It's a comfortable and bouncy mattress, but it doesn't ventilate quite as well as our top picks.

Foam-Only Mattress Deals

Mint Mattress

Foam mattresses are usually made of three to five layers of memory foam and other foams of various densities to help offer more softness, but still give support where it's needed.

  • Tuft and Needle Mint Mattress for $895 ($100 off): Tuft and Needle's Mint Mattress feels like you're lying on a Jello mold, but at the same time, it has a nice firm base to it, so it contours and relieves pressure without letting your body seep in or get out of alignment. We like hybrids more, but this is still a solid choice.

  • Nectar Sleep Foam Mattress for $799 ($399 off): This mattress has that classic memory foam hug to it, and it's great if you're a side sleeper. This year's deal is quite good, at nearly $400 off the queen size, and it comes with a sheet set, mattress protector, and two pillows.

  • Tulo Foam Mattress for $499 ($200 off): You can choose your level of firmness with this model, and it's already about half the price of the competition when it's not on sale.

  • Layla Two-Sided Foam Mattress for $899 ($150 off): If you aren't sure if you're a soft- or a firm-mattress kind of person, this Layla mattress offers both options in one. You'll also get two free pillows with this deal. There is a hybrid version with individually wrapped coils as well. We have not tested it, but we generally prefer hybrid mattresses due to their added buoyancy and support.
