Construction on a $1.25 million public health clinic is set to begin this month in Mount Vernon, said Dr. Bernard Eichold II, who leads the Mobile County Health Department.

The 6,700-square-foot facility will replace two smaller clinics -- one in Mount Vernon and one in Calcedeaver -- according to health department spokesman David Mann.

The project should be completed by February.

Funds for the clinic, which will be built at the intersection of U.S. 43 and Coy Smith Highway, were allocated through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Mann said.

The new center will offer adult primary health care, pediatric health and dental care and Women, Infants and Children aid, commonly referred to as WIC supplemental nutrition services.

Services now provided at the Mount Vernon and Calcedeaver clinics will be consolidated at the larger center, which should accommodate more than 6,500 patient visits a year.

Medical service fees at all nine Mobile County Health Department clinics are based on a patient's ability to pay.

The new clinic should be open five days a week, Mann said, noting that the other centers will close when the new one opens.

"It will enhance the capacity for people who need primary health care service in north Mobile County," Eichold said.
