You know, these meat suits we walk around in for 70 to 80 years can be a real pain in the ass sometimes — or should we say, pain in the back.

The American Chiropractic Association estimates that at any given moment, about 31 million Americans are experiencing lower back discomfort — a painful, pesky, and periodically recurring condition that’s one of the leading causes of missed work days. It notes that most back pain cases are “mechanical or non-organic,” or not linked to serious medical conditions “such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fraction, or cancer.” Sometimes a too-sedentary lifestyle or a torn ligament is to blame, but even just a too-heavy purse or backpack can result in serious lumbar discomfort.

Collectively, we fork over at least $50 billion every year ($100+ billion, if you factor in lost wages) on health care costs for back pain relief, the causes of which can be complex. But for many back pain sufferers, the solution can be as simple as investing in a new and improved mattress — one that’s firm but not not *too* firm, contrary to popular belief, with ample cushioning around your body’s pressure points but enough support to keep your spine straight all night long.

Taking to the interwebs for mattress advice is a tactic that appeals to lots of shoppers — after all, there are no salespeople to hound you or upcharges to cover commission costs. Plus, available bed-in-a-box options have increased in both quantity and quality within the last few years. But finding authentic reviews from legitimate customers is actually quite challenging, with lots of mattress-review blogs being compensated by brands to plug their products. Not even Reddit is safe — in fact, there’s been at least one threadlong fight on r/Mattress over who is and who isn’t a secret shill for Big Mattress. (What a time to be alive, huh?)

At any rate, we’re here to help: After combing through review after review for real customers’ takes on various models, we’re confident that your best mattress for back pain relief can be found in the following list of highly rated beds. (More of a side sleeper? Go here.)

Fire up your Amazon Prime account for a budget-friendly mattress that comes pretty highly recommended by reviewers with lower back and spinal pain.

Designed for maximum comfort and breathability, this model is built from two-and-a-half inches of cool gel-infused memory foam that regulates your temperature; three inches of just-soft-enough poly foam that confirms to your body; and six-and-a-half inches of high-density base foam that keeps you supported throughout the night. It can be propped up on almost any bed frame or foundation — even an adjustable one — and ships compressed in a box right to your doorstep.

It should be noted that since the mattress is being sold through Amazon, it abides by Amazon’s policies — as in, there’s no X-night trial period. Maybe that’s a dealbreaker for you, maybe it isn’t, but either way, you can learn more about the specifics here

Amazon reviewer Rios family writes:

“Arrived on time. Unpacking and unrolling was a breeze. Bed inflated to its full size within 5 min and there was no material odor, but I let it air out for the recommended 24 hours. The bed is firmer than expected but I suspect that will change after a break in period. All in all, as someone that suffers from chronic back pain I have had the best sleep in my life and have woken up more refreshed and with drastically decreased pain. For under $400 delivered you won't regret buying this bed.”

Purple makes its mattresses bright violet because the hue “signifies treating everyone like royalty,” a concept the company clearly took to heart when designing its ultra-supportive new mattress collection.

The firmest model in the lineup, the New Purple.2 utilizes polyurethane foam and two inches of its patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ material on a coil base to provide adaptive comfort and top-tier pressure distribution while retaining a decent amount of bounce. It’s great for single sleepers and couples alike, as there’s virtually no motion transfer, and its breathable Smart Comfort Grid™ design ensures you’ll sleep cool no matter your body type.

Purple also makes a variety of other sleep products (including pillows, bedding, and bases); last we checked, it’s offering a promotion where customers can get a free premium sheet set or pillow with every Purple mattress purchase.

Redditor stefjay10 writes:

“Ive [sic] has my purple.2 about 30 days now and I can say the mattress is soft but firm in all the right places, if that makes sense. ... Since switching over to the purple I’ve had much less back issues and it sleeps really cool.”

Redditor MissMindantyn has had a similarly positive experience with Purple, writing:

“I own a Purple bed. I have cancer and I can sleep like a baby in it, cancer hurts everywhere and this bed solved it for me.

For the best back pain relief (a lot of) money can buy, look no further than Temper-Pedic’s TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt mattress — a best-in-its-class model that’s supportive but not hard, cushioning but not squishy, and overwhelmingly beloved by bed-goers with back problems. (Honestly, it would probably be our No. 1 overall choice if it weren’t so damned expensive.)

While experts typically recommend choosing a firm-ish mattress if you experience back problems, reviewers say both the Soft and Firm models conform remarkably well to different body types to provide excellent relief. The main difference between the two is that the Soft model’s middle layer contains Tempur-Pedic’s plush, relaxing TEMPUR-ES® Comfort material, whereas the Firm model’s middle layer is comprised of Tempur-Pedic’s slightly more resistant Original TEMPUR® Comfort Layer. Other than that, the two mattresses are essentially identical.

At the end of the day, the right TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt mattress for you just comes down to personal preference after a few weeks’ trial. Feel free to take either mattress for a spin, and if you decide to switch within 90 nights, Tempur-Pedic’s awesome support team can help you exchange models.

A verified buyer from Hurricane, WV, writes:

“My husband and I are both dentists. And back and neck pain are practically synonymous with our profession. We have gone through mattress after mattress before we found one that truly helped us and most importantly our bodies get the rest it deserves. We initially ordered the firm thinking that was the right fit for us, however we just couldn't get use to it. The staff at tempurpedic were so kind and allowed us to exchange it for the soft. They guarantee you'll love your mattress and they were right. The best week of sleep and thankfully our search for the perfect mattress has ended. Love love it!”

Comfort, durability, natural cooling, and easy setup make The Original Mattress by Casper a great pick for a good night’s sleep, no matter what your sleeping position is.

Great for back, side, and stomach sleepers, this Casper mattress has three foam layers — each one adding extra full-body comfort. The top layer is soft and made with cooling, breathable Airscape material to keep the night sweats at bay, the second zoned support layer minimizes aches and pains by cradling your natural curves and supporting pressure points, and the base layer rounds out the comfort factor by reinforcing the layers above, minimizing sinking and sagging while you doze off. Its durable construction means that out of all the online memory foam mattresses out there, it's a bit firmer than other options you'll find — so be mindful if you want a super soft mattress that has a lot of give. If that's you, Casper may not be the best pick.

The high-quality memory foam layers aren’t the only perk of the Casper mattress. It has a tough, removable cover made from recycled water bottles that’s built to withstand wear and tear for years to come (and a 10-year warranty if it doesn't). Need assistance with mattress assembly? Casper offers in-home setup, where their team will hand-deliver the mattress to you, set up any products that require assembly, and remove all the packaging once they’re done so you can use your mattress right away.

If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can contact Casper for speedy and helpful customer service support, which many claim to be top tier in terms of customer problem-solving.

Paul, a Casper customer, writes:

"From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! I have traveled for work for years, often sleeping on different beds at different hotels night after night. None of those beds compare to our Casper Mattress and I've probably tried them all. Every time I climb into bed I smile and tell my wife I love our mattress. I think you will love it too."

Stomach-sleeping should be avoided if you’re dealing with back problems, but if that’s your preferred position, the name of the game is even weight distribution and lower back support — two boxes Nectar’s just-firm-enough mattress ticks with its five different layers of premium foam. On the very top is a heat-wicking Tencel cooling cover, which sits on a layer each of body-contouring quilted gel memory foam, weight-distributing gel memory foam, adaptive hi-core memory foam, and a breathable, supportive base.

Having pledged to supply “[the] last mattress you’ll ever need to buy,” Nectar offers its customers a yearlong trial period and a covetable Forever Warranty™ that covers your mattress for as long as you own it. What’s more, the company regularly offers awesome promotions on its site; the last time we checked, customers could take $125 off the mattress of their choice and get two free pillows with their purchase.

Verified buyer Justin S. writes:

“I purchased a brand name mattress from a B&M store about 4 years ago and it was amazing for about 2 years. The foam had lost its will to live and that is a problem for a stomach sleeper like me. The foam where I slept dipped in and my spine would be slightly bent while I slept which caused me to be in pain every morning. I got the Nectar mattress because of the price, reviews, and warranty. It was delivered quickly and was easy to set up with almost no smell to it. As soon as I thought it was fully expanded and good to go I jumped on and almost immediately fell asleep. The biggest difference between this mattress and my old one (even when it was new) is that I could feel the mattress supporting places like my lower back and shoulders. A full week in and no pain, less stress from fatigue, and finally feeling good.”

Similarly to their stomach-sleeping peers, a back sleeper with back problems requires a medium-firm-to-firm mattress that does two things to prevent back discomfort: distributes their weight evenly, and resists too much sinkage in the center of the bed. Brooklyn Bedding measures up to that task with its Signature Hybrid model, a hybrid mattress with the cushioning capabilities of a luxury latex bed.

Each unit contains layers of gel-infused TitanFlex™ foam for cool yet cozy contouring; transitional Energex™ foam for a bit of firmness; up to 1,024 individually encased Ascension™ coils for minimal motion transfer; and high-density foam for extra support. Three different firmness levels are available, and reviewers say both the Medium and Firm varieties get the job done best as far as pain relief goes. (Try the Medium one if you weigh less than 200 pounds, and the Firm if you’re 200 or above.)

Verified buyer and back/side sleeper Alex J. purchased the Medium model; they write:

“Amazing. My back pain has all but stopped! This is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. You don't truly know the difference a quality mattress can make until you finally make the switch.”

Amazon reviewer Michael D adds:

“I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and I'm loving it. I get hot very easily, and I've had no issues with that. I got the firm model. I'm a back sleeper, but I do occasionally sleep on my side. It's definitely the most comfortable mattress I've had. Heavy as a motherF*er though”

Sleeping isn’t the *only* thing you’re doing in bed, after all, so for a mattress that’s supportive enough to relieve back pain but springy enough for sexytime, look no further than the curve-cradling Original Purple Mattress.

Classified as medium-firm, Purple’s OG model is pretty similar to the New Purple.2 Mattress we chose as our top pick for back pain relief, except the former is only available in one firmness level and features a base made of dual-layer polyurethane foam (as opposed to a combination of polyurethane foam and coils). Kepe in mind, the signature Smart Comfort Grid™ technology is still there. You can’t go wrong with either as far as your shagging sessions are concerned, to be sure, but reviewers seem to like the Original Purple better for its bounce.

One Redditor writes:

“We got the purple mattress and frame. It's not cheap. We are not lightweight people, we can f*ck as hard as we want and have no issue with this combination. ... [At] 450lbs between us, and me pounding at full force, it's all good.”

You heard it here first, folks. As for the mattress’ pain-relieving power, verified buyer Charles w. writes:

“I bought the original purple mattress and let me tell you it was the best choice I have ever made. My lower back pain is no more and I sleep all night. I wake up rested and ready for the day.”

Having struggled to find a quality memory foam mattress that cost less than $1,000, Live & Sleep’s team went ahead and made some themselves. Reviewers who both sleep with a partner and experience back pain are particularly smitten by the Resort Elite model, the company’s firmest mattress, citing its impressive motion isolation, body-cradling support, and ultra-cool feel.

Great for back, stomach, and side sleepers alike, the Resort Elite is structured as follows: There’s a luxurious, flexible cover on top, then 10 inches of memory foam, then two-and-a-half inches of premium memory foam, then a half inch of cooling gel-infused memory foam, and then finally a seven-inch base made of high-density support foam. A mattress with that many layers of support tends to cost at least $500, but you’ll find a king-sized Resort Elite on Amazon for just $380 (plus free shipping!)

Redditor Tigtoo writes:

“Looked at Leesa, but went with a Live and Sleep mattress. We had an innerpsring [sic] bed in the past and always felt the movement from each other. I reviewed many different types of mattresses online and found memory foam reduced motion the best and had the highest consumer satisfaction rating. .... We are very happy with the mattress and we love waking up with no pain now.”

Featuring a unique top layer that’s been quilted with CoolFlow™ gel memory foam and a coil base that promotes plenty of airflow, the relatively young bed-in-a-box company’s medium-firm, 12-inch-tall signature model is designed to stay comfortable and cool no matter the season.

For what it’s worth, Allswell Home doesn’t provide a ton of information about its mattresses on its website; whereas other companies offer detailed diagrams explaining their products’ construction, Allswell simply describes its mattress as having “[generous] layers of innovative memory foams layered for supreme comfort and support.” (Seems vague, but OK.) Still, the majority of reviewers seem to really love their Allswell mattresses, and for *that* kind of price, can you really go wrong?

Oh, and one more thing: If you’re ever in the market for an extremely chic tiny home, Allswell sells one of those too, for whatever reason. (On a related note, does anyone have $100,000 I can borrow?)

Mac is a verified buyer who submitted their review to Allswell as part of a free sample program. Here's what they said:

“I have owned every type of mattress ever made, and I found the Allswell Hybrid to be a great product. Luxurious feeling, yet firm. Good support for my back and I awoke feeling rested after a great nights [sic] sleep. The addition of the gel foam layer provides a cool and comfortable sleeping experience. This is a wonderful mattress !”

Air mattresses are by and large a no-no for sleepers experiencing back problems, but hey, you can’t sleep on a hotel-quality California king bed every night, right? For a quick and comfortable sleep setup almost anywhere, SoundAsleep Products has got you covered with its Dream Series Air Mattress.

Highly rated for back pain relief, the mattress utilizes a quintuple threat of shape-retaining ComfortCoil Technology, a quiet and quick internal air pump, puncture-resistant and waterproof construction, integrated cord storage, and a SureGrip bottom that prevents sliding. Its surface is pretty flat when fully inflated, so it might be a little too firm for some sleepers, but the vast majority of Amazon reviewers think it’s *chef’s kiss*.

Amazon reviewer Mike Vedder writes:

“My mother in law has a bad back and was coming to visit. We do not have a spare room and were trying to find a quality air mattress so she would not be in pain the duration of her visit. Needless to say- she was pain free and had the best nights [sic] sleep she had in a long while! There was an issue with the mattress down the line, however, almost a year later. I was relieved to not have to jump through 7 hoops with a company to get some resolve on the issue. They were prompt, helpful and hassle free. This is a great product and Sound Asleep has absolutely wonderful customer service!”
