I

t has been far too long since we’ve interacted, but vacations will do that. Since my last column, my inbox has been flooded with collegiate news.

Also at B-W from Broadview Heights, Janis Augustine, Bachelor of Arts, Jonathan Cooper, Bachelor of Music, Kathryn Gauntner, Master of Business Administration, Sarah Jutte, Master of Business Administration, Brigitte Matchett, Bachelor of Arts, Sekhar Satyawada, Master of Business Administration, Thomas Schrader, Master of Business Administration and Ashley Smith, Bachelor of Arts.

ENGINEER CONTEST: Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Class of 2009 grad Matt Kan was one of six members of the Northwestern University team to head to Clemson University last month to compete in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition .

Matt, a junior engineering major at the university, is the son of Bev and Tim Kan, of Brecksville. According to Bev, who sent me this communiqu , Matt's focus is the 23-foot bridge but he also helped create a concrete canoe for another portion of the project.

It was also noted in the email that this is only the second time, after a long hiatus, that Northwestern has sent a team to the American Society of Civil engineers-sponsored event.

Unfortunately, the team did not win, but it did place in the top 10 in the display category.

WITH THE TRIBE: Maureen Hazmik, of Broadview Heights, sent me word that her son , Padua Franciscan High School junior Tom Hamzik was selected as winner in The Plain Dealer and Cleveland Indians "Be a Tribe Reporter for a Day" contest.

She was happy to let me know that he had a chance to report to Progressive Field May 9 to attend Manny Acta’s press conference, participate in batting practice and interview players Josh Tomlinson, Chris Perez and Justin Masterson.

Tom is a reporter for all of the Padua sports teams and that has resulted in him attending more than 100 games within the past year. He has also kept stats, done play-by-play announcing and written articles, some of which have been posted on cleveland.com and Padua's sports website.

Tom is a graduate of Assumption Academy in Broadview Heights and is the son of Tom and Maureen Hamzik.
