CLAIRE ELIZABETH (KURRASCH) CHRISTIE
Claire Elizabeth (Kurrasch) Christie, passed away surrounded by family in Mellen Manor, Mellen, WI at the age of 98.
She was born on June 17, 1916 in Superior, WI the daughter of Rudolph and Elizabeth (Beggs) Kurrasch. She graduated from Superior East High School, class of 1933. She then graduated from Superior Teachers College, now UW-Superior in 1937. From 1937 to 1940 she was a teacher in the Mellen, WI School District. Claire was also a substitute elementary teacher in the Superior School District, working mainly at Nelson Dewey. On June 1, 1940 she was united in marriage to Wilmot C. Christie in Duluth, MN.
Claire was treasurer and secretary for Christie Oil Company of Mellen, WI for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1980. For over 30 years, Claire would spend the winter months in Panama City Beach, Florida with her husband, Tuntie. She was also the organist for many years at the United Church of Christ in Mellen.
Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Wilmot “Tuntie”, of Mellen, WI; sons, Gerald (Jane) Christie of Mellen, WI and Robert Christie of New Berlin, WI; five grandchildren, Jessica (Chad) Kapellusch of Racine, WI, Erica (Mark) Tess of Merrimack, NH, Jeremy (Jennifer) Christie of Chippewa Falls, WI, Joshua Christie of Honolulu, HI and Elizabeth (Luke) Jadwin of Chenega Bay, Alaska; seven great-grandchildren, Connor & Carter Tess; Grace, Nolan & Aaron Christie; Lily & Emma Jadwin.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rudolph in 1933, mother, Elizabeth in 1937, sisters, Jeanne Hanson in 1973 and Phyllis Boratynski in 1980.
A Memorial Service for Claire will take place at 1:00 p. m. on Wednesday, Oct 1, 2014 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Mellen, WI with Reverend Kenneth Wheeler officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday at the church in Mellen and continue until the hour of service.
Interment will take place in Mellen Union Cemetery, Mellen, WI.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mellen Manor for the wonderful care Claire received since 2009.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Mellen and Ashland, WI.
