RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA —Looking for something to do this upcoming Labor Day? If you're in the Inland Empire, you've got some great options for enjoying the unofficial last day of summer.

  • Oak Glen, California 92399

Take a drive and enjoy kicking off "apple season" over Labor Day weekend in Oak Glen with apple-picking, cider-pressing, plus tours, restaurant specials, farm fun and petting zoos that will entertain the little ones. The farms are on a five-mile loop, so you can't get lost!

2. Fish at Launch Pointe in Lake Elsinore.

You'll need a current, and previously purchased, California Department of Fish & Game license as they are not sold onsite. But those who possess them are golden as they can buy a Launch Pointe pass and can enjoy the lake stocked with bass, catfish and crappie.

"Make sure you stop by William’s Bait & Tackle shop to get the daily fishing report from William Johnson, the Crappie King himself!" operators said. "William has been fishing Lake Elsinore for over 23 years and his experience is unparalleled."

3. Visit the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris.

No special events are planned for Labor Day, but visitors can take in the legendary museum, home to more than 200 historic railway cars and locomotives from Los Angeles and the West on the 90-acre site. Train and/or trolley rides possibly planned. A bit of history meets an old-fashioned, family outing! Access to the grounds and buildings is free, as is parking.

6. Feed a Giraffe at The Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert.

7. Tour The Grounds at Shields Date Garden, Indio.

An Indio destination worthy of a visit is the Shields property with its winding path through the magnificent date farm and gardens, plus a cafe that serves such local specialties as stuffed dates, date shakes, oatmeal with dates, date pancakes, a signature spinach salad topped with Deglet Noor dates ... and you get the idea. The garden tour is $5 per person, but is free after a ceratin amount is spent in the restuarant or gift shop. Make it a date!

8. Extended Holiday Hours on Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Take advantage of the extended hours on Monday, Sept. 2, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the Palm Springs tram. Riding the majestic tram-way perhaps falls off locals' "things to do" list. But with two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, observation decks, a natural history museum, two theaters showing videos and more than 50 miles of hiking trails, perhaps it's time to reconnect with this area amentity, and enjoy a fabulous family outing.
