President Donald Trump has congratulated China on the 70th anniversary of its Communist Party.

On Tuesday, the president tweeted: ‘Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese people on the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China!’

The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949 when Mao Zedong’s communist forces ended a 20 year civil war by defeating the country’s nationalist party, which then retreated to Taiwan. It is now recognized as one of the five remaining communist countries in the world.

China celebrated its 70th anniversary of communist rule with a military parade in Beijing as anti-government protests continued in Hong Kong. The demonstrations began in March and aimed to oppose mainland extradition law, although tensions came to a boil Tuesday after an 18-year-old protester was shot in the chest by police.

US politicians, including many from Trump’s Republican party, condemned the president for his uncharacteristically pro-China tweet amid the violence in Hong Kong.

Republican senator Ben Sasse, from Nebraska, said: ‘Today Chinese tyrants celebrated 70 years of communist oppression with their typically brutal symbolism: by sending a police officer to shoot a pro-democracy protester at point-blank range,’ according to the National Review.

‘The freedom-seekers in Hong Kong mourn this anniversary, and the American people stand with them against those who deny their God-given dignity.’

Josh Hawley, a Republican senator from Missouri, said: ‘Seventy years ago, the Chinese Communist Party seized power from the Chinese people. Since then, its ruthless rule has resulted in the deaths of millions of its own citizens,’

Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, tweeted: ‘The Butchers of Beijing celebrate 70 years of communist tyranny by shooting a student marching for freedom in Hong Kong. What a sadly appropriate way to mark a dark, lamentable anniversary.’

Trump’s odd congratulatory tweet to China came after he hit out at the country and it’s president, Xi Jinping, amid an ongoing trade war.

On Monday, Trump tweeted: ‘We are winning, and we will win. They should not have broken the deal we had with them. Happy Birthday China!’

Donald Trump relied on America’s capitalistic system to amass his staggering net worth, which Forbes estimated to be $3.7 billion. Capitalism is a system in which a countries trade and industry are controlled by private owners who profit from their business ventures, rather that the government.

For decades, Trump commended the American capitalistic system and bragged about his success in it. He has vilified communistic systems like China, in which the government owns and profits off the countries biggest companies.
