508 more cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, including 10 in Johnson County; another 6 deaths statewide

At 10 a.m. Monday, Iowa was reporting an additional 508 cases of COVID-19 and six additional COVID-19-related deaths since the state's tally at 10 a.m. Sunday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov.

Officials report a total of 1,534 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 30 in Johnson County. A death reported by the county last week was the third in the two weeks. The first death here was reported on April 4.

Officials reported 103 influenza-related deaths across the entire state in the 2019-20 flu season, and the novel coronavirus is on track to be the third-leading cause of death in Iowa in 2020, behind just heart disease and cancer, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Reynolds disputes White House assessment of 'many preventable deaths' in Iowa from COVID-19

A total of 901,746 Iowans have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, which causes the disease, including 44,378 in Johnson County. A total of 107,570 have tested positive in Iowa. The state has reported a total of 5,624 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, an increase of 10 since 10 a.m. Sunday.

Friday afternoon, University of Iowa officials said another 10 cases of COVID-19 had been self-reported by students since Monday, totaling 2,075 cases since Aug. 18. Officials reported seven new cases among the university's faculty and staff, for a total of 70 so far this semester.

The university also reported one student living in its residence halls is currently being quarantined, and another four are self-isolating.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, the state reported a new high of 94 people hospitalized with the virus in the state's fifth RMCC, which includes Clinton, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Washington counties; 31 were being cared for in the region's intensive care units. The region peaked at 96 hospitalized patients on Saturday and 39 in ICUs on April 22.

After hitting new records for hospitalized patients statewide Tuesday (463), Wednesday (473) and Thursday (482) last week, 480 were hospitalized Monday morning. According to the state, hospitals have more than 3,000 beds and 416 ICU beds available for coronavirus patients, including 474 general hospital beds and 77 ICU beds in the state's southeast region.

Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered bars, breweries and nightclubs closed in Johnson and five other counties on Aug. 27, and Johnson County's 14-day positivity rate peaked at nearly 25% in the first week of September. The county's 14-day rate fell for weeks, to just 4.8% the first week of October. Reynolds allowed bars to reopen Oct. 5, and the county's 14-day rate was 5.3% Monday morning.

Six people incarcerated at Iowa Medical and Classification Center and one staff members were positive for the disease at 10 a.m. Monday. Another 318 inmates and 41 employees have tested positive and since recovered.

A spike in cases at the Coralville facility was first reported on Aug. 18. One of the inmates at the facility, Richard Leroy Peters, 77, died Sept. 6. Peters was the fourth person under Iowa Department of Corrections supervision to die from complications related to COVID-19, but just the first at the Coralville facility.

The state first reported an outbreak at the Colonial Manor of Amana last week, where 58 cases have been confirmed and just three had recovered. Officials were reporting outbreaks at 64 of Iowa's 440 long-term care facilities Sunday morning.
