Here are the schools and universities with confirmed coronavirus cases

The exact scope of how the coronavirus is spreading between South Dakota schools and campuses is unclear because the state health department and school districts are choosing to release only limited information to the broader community. 

But we're relying on news tips from readers to help confirm cases within schools and colleges statewide.

State health officials post the number of cases among students and staff on the state's COVID-19 website each Monday for the week prior, but they won't be releasing the names of the schools where those cases occur unless a larger exposure event happens, state epidemiologist Josh Clayton has said.

And school districts are often either citing directives and communications with state departments and privacy law concerns that don't protect them from releasing COVID-19 data about campuses as reasons not to do so.

We're doing what we can to gather that information for you to help show and analyze trends over time.

Here's a look at what we know so far by area:

K-12 school districts

Aberdeen School District:

  • Nov. 3: COVID-19 cases have remained steady at Aberdeen's Central High School, according to an email sent to parents from Principal Jason Uttermark and obtained by the Argus Leader. The district had an increase in cases a couple weeks ago, and have remained steady since, he wrote. The last couple of weeks, the school has averaged one per day or seven to eight positive cases per week, which was up from five to six cases per week for the first couple of months, he wrote. "We simply need to remain diligent in encouraging masking and social distancing when appropriate," he stated. "There are no magical solutions that we have control over."
  • Nov. 13: In an update on the district's website, Superintendent Becky Guffin wrote district officials are pleased with the communication from families who have shared their personal circumstances and student absences, but "it is absolutely essential students remain at home if they're experiencing any COVID-related symptoms even if they appear mild." She stated the district has learned COVID is "sneaky" with children and can be present even with what seems like mild or short-term symptoms.
  • Dec. 8: District alters quarantine practices to match new guidance adopted by the state from the CDC.

Agar-Blunt-Onida School District:

  • Oct. 19: According to a Facebook post by the district, the state health department has determined the district to have substantial community spread. The district has adjusted all home Sully Buttes indoor activity spectator limitations to Tier 2, meaning masks are required for all in attendance, there are seating segregation guidelines and spectators are limited to immediate household members of team and the 6-112th grade student body only, the post states. No numbers were given.
  • Oct. 26: Sully County has dropped from “Substantial” to “Moderate” community spread for Covid-19, therefore Sully Buttes home activities have moved back to Tier 1 spectator restrictions: Attendance is open for all to attend, visitors will sit in the north bleachers and home fans will sit in the south bleachers. Mask are encouraged but optional for those in attendance, according to the district's Facebook page.
  • Nov. 23: Face coverings are now required at all home athletic events and activities.

Andes Central Schools:

  • Aug. 17: Delayed school until Aug. 27 because of an increasing number of COVID-19 cases and staffing concerns, according to the district's Facebook page. 
  • Oct. 21: The district has three positive cases among staff, zero among students and four staff are currently quarantined, according to a post by the district on Facebook.
  • Oct. 28: Three active cases among staff, with eight students and one staff member in quarantine, according to a post on the district's Facebook page.
  • Nov. 5: Two active cases; 15 people in 
  • Nov: 8: Students will not report to school Nov. 9-13, but instead will have full remote learning Tuesday through Friday. All activities have been canceled for the week.
  • Nov. 11:  Three active cases, 22 in quarantine
  • Nov. 18: Four active cases, 39 in quarantine
  • Nov. 24: Six active cases among students and staff; 39 in quarantine
  • Dec. 2: Three active cases among students and staff; 28 staff and students in quarantine
  • Dec. 9: One active case among elementary students; 15 students and staff in quarantine
  • Dec. 16: Active -  one elementary student; Quarantined - two high school students; four elementary students

Baltic School District:

  • Oct. 13: According to the district's new online tracker, the district has the following: current total positive cases of students - 10, current total recovered -3; current total positive staff cases - 1
  • Oct. 20: The district has: Nine total current positive cases among students, 12 students who have recovered; seven total positive cases among staff
  • Oct. 21: Current positive cases among students - eight, current recovered cases among students - 13; current positives among staff - six; current recovered staff cases - one
  • Oct. 22: Seven active cases among students, 15 students recovered; four active cases among staff, three recovered
  • Oct. 28: Four active cases among students, 22 recovered; one active case among staff, six recovered
  • Nov. 16: Seven active cases among students, two among staff; 33 recovered cases among students, seven among staff
  • Dec. 21: Two active student cases, 45 total recovered student cases; one active staff cases; eight recovered staff cases

Beresford School District: 

  • Aug. 25: District officials alerted the community on social media that two staff members,  one at the elementary level and one at the middle school and high school level, recently tested positive.
  • Aug: 26: The district reported on social media that four staff members (three at the elementary school and one at the high school have been diagnosed with COVID-19. The district also has four staff members in isolation and eight staff members and seven students in quarantine. 
  • Sept. 23: Two active cases, both at the high school, according to the district's weekly online dashboard. Overall, the district has had eight cases, six of whom have recovered, the website states.
  • Sept. 28: Overall, the district has had eight cases.
  • Sept. 29: The district has one active case at the high school, with nine total cases overall.
  • Oct. 9: The district has three active cases, and nine recovered, bringing the total to 12.
  • Oct. 21: Four active cases, 18 total cases and 14 recovered cases, according to the district's online tracker. The district's also expected to get  rapid tests this week to provide results in 15-30 minutes with a nasal swab.
  • Oct. 28: The district has two active cases. It's had 20 overall, 18 of which have recovered, according to its online tracker.
  • Nov. 16: The district has had 31 positive cases among students and staff since the start of the school year. Currently, there are three active cases. The rest have recovered.
  • Dec. 21: Five active cases; 39 recovered; 44 overall
  • Jan. 29: The district canceled school  for the day for 6-12 grade because of the number of positive COVID-19 cases and identified close contacts at the middle school and high school, a social media post from the district states. The district has seven active cases currently, with a total of 64 overall for the school year, of which 57 have recovered.  

Bon Homme School District:

  • Aug. 17: Delayed school start date until Aug 24, because of a "recent COVID-19 issue that has surfaced," according to an article by the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan.

Brandon Valley School District: 

  • Aug. 19: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Valley Intermediate School, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Aug. 20:  Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive, while they were attending the Brandon Valley High School Unity Day freshman session, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Aug. 24: A person attending Brandon Valley High School tested positive, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Aug. 30: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Valley High School, according to letters sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • September (exact date unclear): A person tested positive while attending the Brandon Valley Middle School, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 1: Children were possibly exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Valley High School, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 8: Children were possibly exposed to the virus after a person attending Fred Assam Elementary tested positive, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 10: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending the high school Sept. 2, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 15: Children may have been exposed to a person testing positive while attending Brandon Valley Middle School, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader. Children may have also been exposed to a person tho tested positive while attending the high school Sept. 10, according to a similar letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 18: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending the high school Sept. 8, according to a letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 17: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Valley Middle School, according to a letter sent to families and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 25: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Valley High School on Sept. 18, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 26: Children may have been exposed to a positive person attending Robert Bennis Elementary on Sept. 22, according to a letter sent to parents.
  • Sept. 21-28: Children may have been exposed to someone who attended Brandon Elementary during these dates, according to a letter sent to parents.
  • Sept. 29: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending the high school Sept. 24 and Sept. 25, according to an alert sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 30: Children may have been exposed to a person testing positive for COVID-19 while attending the Brandon Valley Middle School, according to a district letter to parents.
  • Oct. 3: Children may have been exposed to a to a person who tested positive and attended at Robert Bennis Elementary  on Sept. 30, according to a letter sent to parents.
  • Oct. 6: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Elementary on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, according to an alert sent to parents.
  • Oct. 26: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Elementary on Oct. 19 and Oct. 23, according to a notification sent to parents.
  • Oct. 27: Children may have been exposed to a person who tested positive while attending Brandon Elementary this date, according to a letter sent to parents.

Brookings School District:

  • Sept. 3:  The district reported its first confirmed student case of COVID-19, according to an article by the Brookings Register. The case occurred at an organized student activity with high school and middle school students, the article states.
  • Sept. 21: The district has one active case at Mickelson Middle School, according to its online dashboard.
  • Sept. 23: The district has six active cases at the following campuses: Two at Brookings High School, two at Mickelson, one at Camelot and one at Dakota Prairie, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Sept. 28: The district has eight active cases: Four at the high school, one at Mickelson Middle School, two at Camelot and one at Dakota Prairie, according to its online tracker.
  • Sept. 29: The district has seven active cases, with four at the high school, one at Camelot and one at Dakota Praire, according to its online tracker.
  • Sept. 30: Six active cases, with one at the high school, one at Dakota Prairie and two at Camelot
  • Oct. 8: Three active cases, with one at the high school, Mickelson Middle School and one at Medery
  • Oct. 21: Five active cases: One at Brookings High, two at Mickelson Middle School, one at Medary and one other.
  • Oct. 22: 10 active cases: Three at the high school, two at Mickelson Middle School, one at Hillcrest, one at Medary and three others.
  • Oct. 28: The district has five active cases, with three at the high school, one at Camelot and one at Dakota Prairie, according to its online tracker.
  • Nov. 16: 10 active cases throughout the district, including two at the high school, five at Mickelson Middle School, one at Camelot, one at Dakota Prairie and one at Medary
  • Dec. 20: 10 active cases total

Burke School District: 

  • Sept. 15: The district canceled in-person learning for a second day because of a high number of positive cases among staff. Students in middle school and high school are expected to begin flex learning with Google Classroom and Zoom through the end of the week. The district will re-evaluate its status then, according to a post by the district on social media. The post did not state how many positive cases there were.
  • Sept. 16: There's one active case in the elementary, and two recovered cases in the high school. There's eight active cases among K-12 staff and one recovered. There are 20 students in quarantine as close contacts, according to letters sent home to families and posted to the school district's Facebook page. All school employees have been deemed essential workers.
  • Sept. 23: 1 active case and one recovered case at the elementary level, both students; three active student cases and two recovered at the upper grade levels; zero active cases among staff; three students in quarantine, according to a letter sent out to families and posted to social media by the district.

Canistota School District:

  • Sept. 7: At least 20 high school students are under quarantine for the next two weeks, according to a social media post by the district Sunday.

Centerville School District:

  • Aug. 31:  A positive case has been confirmed within the district, according to an alert sent out to the district community and obtained by the Argus Leader.

Chamberlain School District:

  • Sept. 21: Chamberlain is moving its middle school and high school classes to eLearning for Sept. 22-25 due to the high number of absent staff. At least 25% of the Chamberlain MS/HS staff had either tested positive, had children quarantining or were awaiting a test result, Superintendent Justin Zajic said.
  • Sept. 26: School board decided to adjust the 6-12 grade schedule to 8:25 a.m. to 1 p.m. from now until Oct. 2, masks are now required for all grade levels and all junior high and JV activities are canceled until Oct. 3. The elementary schedule remains unchanged, according to a social media post by Superintendent Justin Zajic.
  • Oct. 9: Three positive cases at the high school with 23 in quarantine; two positives at the middle school with 27 in quarantine; two positives at the elementary level, with 13 in quarantine, according to a weekly report posted to the district's Facebook page.
  • Oct. 23: Two positive cases at the elementary school, 25 in quarantine; 1 active case at the middle school, 13 in quarantine; 2 active cases at the high school, 14 in quarantine, according to a post on the district's Facebook page.

Chester Area School District: 

  • Aug. 28: The district sent a letter out to parents, stating students might be at risk for potential exposure to the virus after someone tested positive while attending the district's on-site High Plains Alternative School, located in the Chester Area Cyber School building.

Clark School District: 

  • Sept. 22: One active case among students and staff at the middle/high school level, according to the district's weekly online dashboard.
  • Oct. 9: One active case at the elementary school, according to the district's latest online update.
  • Nov.. 9: Seven total current positive cases
  • Dec. 8: Two active cases

Colome Consolidated School District:

  • Sept. 15: The district has had a total of four confirmed cases, two staff members and two students, according to a notification letter sent home to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.

Dell Rapids School District: 

  • Sept. 10: A student at the elementary level was diagnosed with the virus, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Oct. 9: A letter to parents from the district states the district has seen "the highest number of active and new cases this year," but the letter does not state how many. The letter also states many of the new cases are tied to the district's volleyball program.
  • Dec. 10: A seventh grade ELA teacher was diagnosed with COVID-19, according to an email sent to parents.

Deuel School District:

  • Sept. 7: Two students were confirmed with COVID, one in the district's junior class and another in the junior kindergarten class, according to a post by the district on social media. The junior kindergarten class and teacher will quarantine,  as well as the close contacts with the junior student, the post read. School remains in session.  
  • Sept. 29: The district currently has four high school students and one staff member who has tested positive, while seven other staff members are in quarantine because they are considered close contacts. The district currently has enough substitutes to keep school in session, but additional cases could force officials to move students into remote learning, according to a message by the superintendent on the district's Facebook page.
  • Sept. 30: Four additional cases have been reported at the high school, forcing the high school to transition into remote learning Oct. 1. Students will return to in-person learning Oct. 12, per a message by the superintendent on the district's Facebook page.
  • Oct. 1: Three additional cases have been reported, two middle school students and one elementary teacher, according to a post by the Deuel superintendent on Facebook. The district's middle school and elementary school will move to remote learning starting Monday because of the number of positive cases, close contacts and a shortage of substitutes.

Douglas School District: 

  • Aug. 25: Five people, including three staff members and two students have been confirmed as positive COVID-19 cases so far this fall, according to the Rapid City Journal.
  • Aug. 30: Four staff members, each at different schools, are known to be positive cases, according to the school district's COVID calculator.  Two students, one at the high school and one at the middle school, have also tested positive. At least 30 staff members are in a 14-day quarantine, according to the tracker. School has been delayed until Sept. 8 because of a shortage in staff.
  • Sept. 3:  Positive cases among staff currently stand at four, while positive cases among students still stands at two.
  • Sept. 9: Cases stand at one, and it's among staff, according to the district's online tracker. However, at least 10 students are in quarantine.
  • Sept. 18: The district has three active cases among staff, and two among students, according to its online calculator. There are currently 14 students in 14-day quarantine.
  • Sept. 23: One active case among staff, four active cases among students; One staff member and 26 students in quarantine, according to the district's online tracker
  • Sept. 28: One active case among staff, four in quarantine; eight active cases among students with 47 students in quarantine
  • Oct. 8: Three active cases among students, 38 students in quarantine; three staff in quarantine
  • Oct. 21: Three active cases among staff, six in quarantine; three active cases among students, 35 in quarantine
  • Oct. 28: Four active cases among staff, with eight in quarantine; seven active cases among students, with 51 in quarantine, according to the district's tracker.
  • Nov. 15: Five positive cases among staff, eight staff members out for 14-day quarantine;17 active cases among students, 136 students in quarantine
  • Dec. 18: Three active cases among staff, with six in quarantine; 18 active cases among students, 107 in quarantine

Dupree School District:

  • Sept. 8: The district sent seventh through 12th grade students home for two days to do online learning after some students were considered close contacts to a positive case not involving a Dupree student, according to a post by the district on social media. 
  • Sept. 24: A staff member within the district tested positive, according to a post by the district on social media. Three staff members are considered close contacts, and Pre-k through third grade students will be kept home this Friday. 
  • Oct. 16: A cook has tested positive for the virus, but no students are considered close contacts. Other food personnel are considered close contacts and will be quarantining out of precaution, according to a Facebook post by the district.
  • Oct.. 29: The district is keeping students home the week of Nov. 2-6 because of a number of students who are quarantining as close contacts. The district has had a few positive students and two positive staff members to date, according to a post by the district on Facebook. In-person learning is expected to return Nov. 9.

Cheyenne - Eagle Butte Schools:

  • Sept. 15: All students will start the year learning remotely because of local health conditions, according to the district's Facebook page. The district will re-evaluate in November, the post states.

Elk Point-Jefferson School District:

  • Oct. 7: One active cases at the elementary school, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Oct. 20: Three active cases, one at the middle school and one at the elementary school
  • Oct. 25: The district has two active cases, one at the elementary level and one at the middle school level
  • Nov. 16: Four active cases, two at the high school and two at the elementary school
  • Dec. 18: Two active cases at the high school

Ethan School District:

  • Sept. 17: A student or staff member has been diagnosed, according to an alert on the district's website. 
  • Sept. 22: A student within the district has been diagnosed, according to an alert posted to the district's website.

Eureka School District:

  • Sept. 15: The district closed its school Wednesday after a confirmed case to do deep cleaning.

Estelline/Hendricks School District:

  • Aug. 18: Two players tested positive on the football team, which sent the rest of the team into quarantine and delayed the team's first game until Sept. 4.

Flandreau School District:

  •  Sept. 9: The district has two active cases at the high school level, according to the school district's online tracker.
  • Sept. 23: Zero active cases, but four recovered cases among students and six recovered cases among staff, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Sept. 29: Five recovered cases among students and staff
  • Oct. 8: Two active cases at the high school level, according to the district's online tracker 
  • Oct. 21: One active case among staff at the high school, seven recovered cases among the district total
  • Oct. 22: Four active cases among students and staff, seven recovered cases total
  • Oct. 28: Six active cases among staff and students, with 10 recovered cases total
  • Oct. 29: Because of the rising number of cases in the county as well as the number of students in quarantine, the district will move to remote learning for a period of two weeks, starting Nov. 3, according to a notice by the superintendent on the district's website. Face-to-face learning is expected to restart Nov. 16.
  • Nov. 16: Four active cases among students, zero among staff; 14 students have recovered and 16 staff have recovered
  • Dec. 21: Three active cases among students and staff; 33 recovered cases among students and 18 recovered cases among staff overall

Garretson School District:

  • Sept. 28: A Garretson High School student tested positive, according to a letter sent home to parents. 

Gayville-Volin School District:

  • Sept. 23: The district will be moving to online learning at least until Oct. 6, starting Sept. 24. The district has nine active cases among students and staff at its upper level, and one active case at the elementary level, according to its online dashboard. "In consultation with the Department of Health,  our administration and board, we have determined that we have too many faculty, staff and students that are deemed close contacts, have to quarantine, have tested positive or are awaiting tests that we are better off to suspend in person learning ," Superintendent Jason Selchert posted on the district's website.
  • Sept. 24: Five active cases among staff, eight among students, according to the district's tracker.
  • Sept. 25:  Zero active cases, 18 recovered cases
  • Oct. 14: One active case at the middle school and high school level among staff, two among students; one active case among elementary staff
  • Oct. 23: Two active cases at the middle and high school level among students, one active case among students at the elementary level; 10 recovered cases total
  • Nov. 9: One active case among staff and one active case among students at the elementary level; one active case among students at the middle school and high school level; 23 recovered cases total
  • Dec. 18: Zero active cases, 30 recovered cases districtwide

Hamlin School District:

  • Sept. 22: Students were possibly exposed to a person with COVID in school district facilities on Sept. 21, according to a letter sent to employees and families and posted to the district's website.
  • Oct. 21: Children were possibly exposed to people with COVID-19 in Hamlin school facilities Oct. 19-20, according to a letter posted to the district's website.
  • Oct. 22: Children were possibly exposed to people with COVID-19 in Hamlin school facilities Oct. 21, specifically middle school staff and students and other employees in the building, according to a letter sent to families and posted to the district's website.

Harrisburg School District:

  • As of Aug. 24: The district currently does not have any positive cases of students inside any of the campuses so far this school year, said Superintendent Tim Graf.  The district does, however, have two staff members and three students that tested positive prior to the start of the school year on Aug. 20.  None of these individuals had been in school buildings since and are either in isolation or have completed their isolation, he said.  Two other students have also self-reported to the district earlier in the summer prior to when the state health department began notifying schools of positive cases.  
  • Aug. 26: The district confirmed a positive case at Harrisburg High School, which moved the school from a green status level to a yellow level, according to an email obtained by the Argus Leader. The change means the school is open with an increased level of precautions. The rest of the district's campuses are at green, meaning there are no confirmed cases at those school buildings.
  • Aug. 28: North Middle School is now at yellow status level because of confirmed a case or cases within the building, meaning the school day starts with an increased level of precautions. South Middle School was also upgraded to a yellow status.
  • Aug. 31: Liberty Elementary is also now at yellow status after a confirmed case or cases, according to the district's website.
  • Sept. 7: Five schools out of nine are now at status level "yellow" after a positive case was reported at Horizon Elementary School.
  • Sept. 9: South Middle School and Liberty Elementary have now returned back to status level "green," meaning only three of nine schools are at "yellow" now. "Green" means there are no confirmed cases at the building level.
  • Sept. 14: Only one campus, Harrisburg High, remains at status level "yellow." The rest have returned to status level "green," according to the district's website.
  • Sept. 15: North Middle School is back in "yellow" status.
  • Sept. 21: Journey Elementary is at "yellow" status
  • Sept. 28: Only the high school and North Middle School is at "yellow"
  • Sept. 30: North Middle School is no longer at "yellow" status, but Explorer Elementary has now been upgraded to that level and the high school remains at that level. No other campus is at "yellow" at this time.
  • Oct. 7: The high school as well as Endeavor Elementary have been bumped up to level "orange," meaning there is likely community spread within a classroom, cohort or building, according to the district's website. The level is not "number specific," Superintendent Tim Graf said. "In fact, we have very few active cases in each of our buildings but we did have what is assumed to be spread within the building," Graf said. "We could have 4,5, or 6 active cases in a building and be at the yellow level and only have 2 active cases at the Orange level. We have only had 2 positives out of literally hundreds of close contacts from what we can tell.  Nearly all of our positives are coming from outside of school close contacts and this is especially true within the homes." School will open with a significantly increased level of precautions, and temperature checks will be given by parents at home and staff at school. The next level is read, meaning there is significant community spread and off-campus learning will be in place. Currently, there are 11 cases within the district, according to an email sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. North Middle School, South Middle School, Freedom Elementary and Horizon Elementary are at "yellow," while the district's remaining three schools are at level "green."
  • Oct. 8: Currently, the district has 10 active cases throughout the district''s population of approximately 6205  (0.16%), Graf said.   "We have tried to clarify to our families as well as these are the first cases we have had where we have had assumed spread within a building," he said.   
  • Oct. 21: Only the high school is at level "orange, while the rest are yellow, except for Journey and Explorer elementary schools, which are green
  • Oct. 22: The district currently has 20 active cases among students and staff, according to a weekly update sent to families and obtained by the Argus Leader. As of Wednesday, the district has had 88 cases since the beginning of the school year. All but three are assumed to have been close contacts outside of school. The district also has quarantined 528 people so far, the update states.
  • Oct. 29: The district has two campuses at level orange: Harrisburg High and Endeavor Elementary. The rest of the campuses, except for one are yellow. Freedom Elementary is at green.
  • Oct. 30: The district has a total of 25 active cases among students and staff, with 248 students required to quarantine and 28 students recommended to quarantine, according to a weekly update sent to parents by the superintendent. Additionally, because of consistent mask usage, there are 110 students who were recommended to quarantine, but who have chosen to remain in school. The district still has not had a positive case from those who were recommended to quarantine. The vast majority of students and staff who are required to quarantine have been deemed a close contact out of school, the email states.
  • Nov.5: There are 28 active cases in the district (.45%), a rate still below the state and county rate of active cases, which is 1.6%, according to an email from the superintendent to parents. At one point, the district reached a high of 35 active cases this week. So far, the district has had a total of 136 cases since the beginning of the school year, the email states. Also, Explorer Elementary is now at level orange and the high school remains at orange. The rest, except for Journey Elementary, is yellow. Journey is green. 
  • Nov. 10: Superintendent Tim Graf alerted families that the possibility of remote learning may be in the future if cases and staff absences don't improve. Three campuses are at orange level, while the rest are yellow. Graf estimated active cases to be currently less than 30.
  • Nov. 16: The district passed a mask mandate, effective Wednesday until after the holiday season, following 50 positive cases among students and staff, with more than 400 students and more than 30 staff in required quarantine.
  • Nov. 20: The district has 38 active cases between students and staff, and the number of quarantined students has decreased by 45 since the beginning of the week, according to an email from the district sent to parents. 
  • Nov. 24: As of this morning, the district has 27 active cases between students and staff, a substantial decrease from a high of 50 active cases two weeks ago, according to an email from the school district sent to parents. The number of those who are required to quarantine has also dropped to 260 throughout the district, with two schools changing risk levels. Explorer Elementary returned to green and Horizon Elementary moved to yellow, the email states. Families are encouraged to report to building principals if there are positive cases over the Thanksgiving break.
  • Nov. 30: The district said in an email to parents that officials anticipate a post-Thanksgiving increase in cases, but as of Monday the number of active cases stood at 23, representing.37% of the students and staff. The number of students who are in quarantine has also decreased to 172, the email states. Explorer Elementary moved from green to yellow, while Freedom Elementary moved from yellow to orange and Endeavor Elementary moved from orange to yellow.
  • Dec. 4: The district also altered its quarantine practices to match those newly adopted by the state and meant to limit the number of days a close contact would be required to quarantine.
  • Dec. 17: There are currently 25 active cases among students and staff, with 132 students required to quarantine and an additional 124 students who were recommended to quarantine, but who chose to continue going to school, according to an email sent to parents.

  • Jan. 12: The district currently has eight active cases among students and staff, representing a total of .12% of the district. The school board also extended its mask mandate through March 13 to coincide with the city of Sioux Falls, an email to parents states.
  • Jan. 18: The district currently has 11 active cases between students and staff., representing a total of.18% of the district's population, according to an email sent to parents.
  • Jan. 26:  The district has 22 active cases (students and staff), representing a 0.35% positivity rate, according to an email sent to families.

Herreid School District:

  • Sept. 9: The campus shut down for deep cleaning after a positive case involving a student until Sept. 11, according to a post by the district on social media.
  • Sept. 22: A staff member tested positive, and the school will be closed for remote learning until Sept. 24, according to a post by the district on social media.

Hill City School District:

  • September (exact date unclear): The district reported its first case this month, a senior at the high school, in emails to parents, obtained by the Argus Leader. 

Hot Springs Schools:

  • Oct. 6: Because of an increase in positive cases, potential exposures and close contacts, the district will move to online learning for the rest of the week to give time for deep cleaning in all facilities, according to a post by the school district on Facebook. No numbers were given.
  • Oct. 26- 29: The district will offer face-to-face learning with an online option, because officials have seen a continuation of cases among students and staff as cases across the state continue to rise. A notification on the district's website states within the last week, officials have received notification of three positive student cases and two staff cases, while others continue to quarantine.
  • Nov. 17: The district will be moving to a blue/white alternate schedule for the remainder of the week, starting Wednesday. The district will then move to remote learning next week for Monday and Tuesday ahead of Thanksgiving break, according to a post on the district's Facebook page. "We will continue to monitor the number of cases in the county and the needs of our medical community for the week following Thanksgiving. A final determination for the week following Thanksgiving will be made soon," the post states.

Hoven School District:

  • Sept. 21:  Canceled classes for Monday and Tuesday and will begin transitioning grades 7-12 to flex and e-learning on Wednesday. An update published to the school's Facebook page states that they will remain in online classes "until further notice." The district has at least three to four active cases as of Friday, with at least 21 people who are considered close contacts.
  • Sept. 27: Hoven School District has moved grades 9-12 to continue flex learning and e-learning through Oct. 2, according to an announcement from the school district, following an emergency school board meeting Sunday.
  • Oct. 6: A staff member has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter sent to parents and posted to the district's Facebook page.
  • Oct. 8: A staff member has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter sent to parents and posted to the district's Facebook page.

  • Aug. 4: The district delayed the start of the year until Aug. 24 after several staff members were considered close contacts to a positive case and the ability to sanitize using machines had also been delayed, according to the district's website.

Lead Deadwood School District:

  • Aug. 20: Lead Deadwood School District had a staff or student test positive recently, according to a letter by the superintendent and obtained by the Argus Leader.

Lemmon School District:

  • Aug.26: The administration announced online it has canceled onsite instruction from Aug. 24 through Sept. 7 for the safety of all elementary staff and students. In-person classes will now begin Sept. 8, according to the district website. At least 121 students are now staying home because four elementary staff members tested positive as of Monday afternoon, according to a report by KOTA News.

Lennox School District: 

  • Sept. 25: One active case at LWC Junior High according to the district's online tracker.
  • Sept. 30: The district has one active case at LWC Junior High, according to its online tracker.
  • Oct. 7: The junior high has three active cases and one recovered case, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Oct. 21: Lennox Elementary has one active case, while the high school has two. The junior high has six recovered cases, while the high school has four. Overall, the district has had 13 confirmed cases, according to its online tracker.
  • Oct. 28: The district has 10 active cases, and 13 recovered cases. Overall, the district has had 23 cases total.
  • Oct. 30: Lennox Superintendent Chad Conaway said the district has 17 active cases between students and staff right now. If things don't improve, the district may have to consider temporarily moving to remote learning, he said.
  • Nov. 13: 20 active cases, 50 recovered and 70 total

Lower Brule Schools:

  • Sept. 21: A staff member tested positive, and five individuals have been identified as close contacts, according to a social media post by Superintendent Lance Witte.

Lyman School District: 

  • Sept. 19: A staff member was diagnosed with COVID-19 in the school, but the case has not yet been confirmed by the state health department, according to a post on the district's Facebook page.
  • Sept. 22: One confirmed case among staff, with pending tests waiting, according to a video update from the superintendent on the district's website.
  • Sept. 26: Lyman School District moved to remote learning until Oct. 2, because of a large number of students and staff who are quarantined, according to an update on the district's Facebook page. The statement did not give specific numbers.
  • Oct. 19: The district has two active cases, which is down from last week and previous weeks, according to a statement from the superintendent on the district's Facebook page. 

Marion School District:

  • Sept. 20: Schools closed Sept. 21 because of a loss of staffing tied to COVID-19, according to a message posted to the district's Facebook page. The district's status level was raised to yellow, meaning students are required to wear masks at all times in small group activities and whenever they move throughout the building.

McLaughlin School District:

  • Sept. 4: Three employees tested positive, according to the district's Facebook page. The school closed for two days to sanitize and clean. 
  • Oct. 26: Because of a positive "COVID incident," the district's kitchen will be closed until Nov. 9, according to a post on the district's Facebook page.
  • Oct. 26-30: Special education services will be provided virtually this week because of a growing number of cases in the district, according to the district's Facebook page.

Meade School District:

  • Sept. 18: Active cases include three at the elementary level, six at the middle school and 11 at the high school, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Sept. 25: Active cases include four at the elementary level, nine at the middle school level and four at the high school level
  • Oct. 2: The district has a total of 12 active cases, according to its online tracker.
  • Oct. 16: The district had a total of 10 active cases, according to its online tracker.
  • Oct. 23: The district has 15 active cases.
  • Nov. 13: 10 active cases at the elementary level, 14 at the middle school and eight at the high school

Milbank School District: 

  • Sept. 4: A confirmed case has been reported at the middle school and elementary school, according to a notification posted to the district's website by the superintendent.

  • Sept. 18: A confirmed case was identified at the elementary school, according to the district's website.

  • Oct. 1: A case was confirmed in the high school, according to an alert on the district's website.

Miller/Highmore-Harrold School District: 

  • Sept. 25: Friday football game canceled because of confirmed COVID-19 case on the team, coach Quinton Cermak confirmed Friday afternoon.  When asked how many of his players will have to quarantine as close contacts, Cermak said they are still working through contact tracing, adding: "It looks like it could be pretty substantial."

Mitchell School District:

  • Oct. 9:  The district reported a total of 16 COVID-19 cases among schools this year, according to an email sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. Active cases were at the following schools: One at L.B. Williams, three at Mitchell Middle School and one at Mitchell High School. The rest have recovered, according to the email.
  • Oct. 14: The district reported a total of 25 cases among schools so far this year, according to an email sent to parents. Active cases were at the following schools this week: Five at Mitchell High, two at Mitchell Middle School, three at L.B. Williams, zero at Gertie Belle Rogers and one at Longfellow, according to the email.
  • Oct. 28: Three active cases, with two at the high school and one at L.B. Williams. So far the district has had a total of 38 cases so far this school year, according to an email sent to parents. 
  • Nov. 18: The district has 33 active cases across its campuses, with a total of 112 total cases over all. The rest have recovered, according to an email from the district sent to parents. "Like the numbers in our community, county, state, and nation, the numbers in our school district are definitely on the rise.  Currently, we have been able to handle the increases through our normal measures and staffing," Superintendent Joseph Graves stated in the email. "It is possible that sometime in the coming weeks, we may need to move classrooms, schools, or the district to an eLearning format.  If that does occur, we will issue an announcement to that effect as far in advance as possible in order to allow everyone sufficient time to plan. At this time, however, school remains in session with students physically present in classrooms."
  • Nov. 25: The district has a total of 33 active cases, with a total of  155 cases throughout the district overall. Of the 155,  122 have recovered, according to an email sent to parents. The email also states that moving to eLearning remains an option in the coming weeks as cases continue to climb across the state.
  • Dec. 2: The district has a total of 20 active cases, with a total of 166 cases throughout the district overall. Of the 166, 146 have recovered, according to an email sent to parents. "At this time, the number of active cases in our schools has definitely fallen and the number of children physically present in school has risen," Superintendent Joseph Graves stated in the email. "Hopefully, these trends will continue in the coming weeks."

  • Oct. 27: The district is seeing an impact of COVID-19 cases on staff and students, with a few more cases reported at the high school, with students at each school level staying home because of exposures, according to a post to the district's Facebook page. The most recent surge is making a "significant impact" on the district's staff, with some who are actively ill or who have positive individuals within their homes, the post states.

Northwestern Area School District:

  • Sept. 16: The district had its first cases of students test positive, according to a post on the district's Facebook page. It did not include how many.

Parker School District:

  • Sept. 18: Two positive cases at the junior high/high school level, according to the district's online tracker.
  • Oct. 15: The district has a total of 10 positive cases, and seven recovered, according to its online tracker.

Parkston School District: 

  • Sept. 21: A student at the high school was diagnosed, according to a notification posted to the district's website.

Pierre School District:

  • Sept. 17: Pierre's T.F. Riggs High School will close Friday after at least 150 students were placed in quarantine and roughly 15 students tested positive, according Kelly Glodt, the Pierre School District superintendent.

Selby Area School District:

  • Sept. 15: The district has had at least three positive cases at its high school, according to a post by the district to Facebook. The district closed its campus Wednesday and Thursday for the K-12 facility to be deep-cleaned. Students moved to flex learning  and postponed athletic practices and games, the notice stated.
  • Oct. 7: The elementary school will not have school Oct. 8 because of a positive COVID-19 case, according to the district's Facebook page. School will continue Oct. 9.

Sioux Falls School District:

  • August (exact date unclear): At least two students tied to Roosevelt High School have recently been diagnosed with positive cases, according to an email and a letter from the school district obtained by the Argus Leader. 
  • Aug. 19: Parents were informed a Washington High football student associated with the football team tested positive, according to an email sent to them by the Sioux Falls School District
  • Aug: 20: Another local media outlet has warned of possible exposure at Lincoln High School within the Sioux Falls School District to staff, but the Argus Leader has not yet confirmed that information.
  • Aug. 28: A Washington High School marching band student and a Laura B. Anderson Elementary staff member has tested positive, according to letters to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Aug. 30: A student at Whittier Middle School and a Lincoln High School staff member recently tested positive, according to letters sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Aug. 31: A student at Roosevelt High School and a student at Laura B. Anderson Elementary has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to letters obtained by the Argus Leader.

A staff member at the CTE Academy was also diagnosed, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader. A student at the Axtell Park building was also identified as a positive case, according to letters obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 9: A case has been identified at Washington High School, according to parent emails obtained by the Argus Leader. A student and a staff member have tested positive for COVID-19 at Lincoln High as well, according to an email alert sent to parents.
  • Sept. 10: A student at Memorial Middle School has tested positive and a positive case has been identified within the Roosevelt High School community, according to parent letters sent by the district and obtained by the Argus Leader. A student at CTE has also been diagnosed, according to letters sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 11: A student at Washington High was diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. The Edison Middle School community also reported a case.
  • Sept. 13:  A member of the Lincoln High community has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. The letter does not state whether it is a student or staff member.
  • Sept. 14: A student at Memorial Middle School  and a member of the Lincoln High community has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to letters sent out to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. Hawthorne Elementary has also moved to "green level 2" status, meaning the campus will open with more mitigation measures and one classroom has been moved to a remote learning model for a period of 14 days.
  • Sept. 15: A positive case was identified within the Roosevelt High community, and another was identified within the Washington High School community, according to emails sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. A case was also identified within the Whittier Middle School community, according to emails sent home to parents.
  • Sept. 16: A member of the Lincoln High School community and a student at the Axtell Park build has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to letters sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 17: A student at Memorial Middle School, a person at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary, a person at Whittier Middle School and a member of the Lincoln High community has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to letters sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 18: A positive case was identified at Memorial Middle School and another at Roosevelt High School, according to letters to parents obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 21:  Two cases were identified at the Axtell Park building,  one was identified at Patrick Henry Middle School, and a member of the Lincoln High School community, one in the Roosevelt High community and another in Discovery Elementary community have also been diagnosed, according to letters obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 22: A person connected to the Lincoln High community, another with the Memorial Middle School community and another with the Roosevelt High community has been diagnosed, according to parent letters obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 23: A person connected to Memorial Middle School has been diagnosed with the virus, as has someone connected to Axtell Park and Cleveland Elementary, according to emails obtained by the Argus Leader. 
  • Sept. 25: A positive case has been identified at John Harris Elementary and one at Edison Middle School, according to notification letters obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 27: A positive case was identified within the Lincoln High community, the Eugene  Field A+ community and one at the CTE Academy, according to family letters obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Week of Sept. 28: Hawthorne Elementary has since returned to "green level 1" 
  • Sept. 28:  A positive case has been identified within the Discovery Elementary community and the CTE Academy, according to alerts sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
    Superintendent Jane Stavem said of the district's more than 25,000 Pre-k-12th grade students,only .11 % tested positive and .37% of staff have tested positive, a percentage representative of Monday only. Many more, however, are under the district's mandatory close contact quarantine time of 14 days, Stavem said. That's 5.2% of students and 1.47% of staff, she said. There have not be any hospitalizations the district is aware of, she said. 
  • Sept. 29: A positive case has been identified within the Eugene Field A+ school community, the Roosevelt High School community, the Lincoln High community, the Patrick Henry Middle School community, the Cleveland Elementary community and the Washington High School community, according to a parent letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 30: A positive case has been identified within the Robert Frost/Challenge Center community, the Oscar Howe community, the Lowell Elementary community, the Lincoln High community and the Roosevelt High community, according to parent notification letters obtained by the Argus Leader.

  • Sept. 20: The district announced it will be moving all classes, junior kindergarten through 12th grade, to distance learning beginning Tuesday due to "staff exposure and subsequent quarantining." Classes for Monday have been canceled, according to the district website, which states traditional classes will resume Oct. 1.

Tea Area School District: 

  • Aug. 19: Tea Area School District identified its first case of the new school year on the first day back, Superintendent Jennifer Lowery said. The case was at Legacy Elementary. She would not say whether the person was a student or staff member, but added that almost all five of the district's schools sit at mitigation level of  "yellow," meaning anywhere from one to five active positive cases should have been on the campus by the time school started this week, regardless of whether the person actually stepped foot into the building.

Timber Lake School District

  • Oct. 3: Timber Lake School District will move to distance learning (PK-12) for the week of Oct. 5 due to staff and student exposure to COVID and subsequent quarantining/isolation. The district currently has five active COVID cases, according to the school website. Classes will be held Tuesday through Thursday (Friday is a scheduled day off).
  • Oct. 9: School will return back to normal Monday, according to a post on Facebook by the district.

Todd County School District: 

  • Sept. 15: The Todd County School District has moved to distance learning Sept. 16-18 because of COVID health and safety concerns, but due to staff working remotely and district buildings being closed, there will be no food distribution Sept. 16-18. Food distribution will continue Sept. 21.
  • Oct. 8-9: Concerned about the health and safety of students, staff and the community and with a Rosebud Sioux Tribal order, the district offices and building facilities will be closed through Oct. 9. Remote learning will continue these days, according to the district's website.
  • Oct. 19-21: Concerned about the health and safety of students, staff and the community and with the Rosebud Sioux Tribal order about a shutdown, the district office and all school facilities will be closed through Oct. 21. Distance learning will not continue during this time, according to the district's website.
  • Oct. 26:  Concerned about the health and safety of students, staff and the community and with the Rosebud Sioux Tribal order about a shutdown, the district office and all school facilities will be closed through Oct. 28, but distance learning will continue during this time, according to the district's website.

Tri-Valley School District: 

  • Oct. 9: The district has two positive cases currently, and has experienced a total of 14 this school year, according to an email sent to parents by the superintendent. 
  • Oct. 27: Seven active cases, 16 recovered; 23 for the school year total, according to an email update to parents by the superintendent.

Viborg-Hurley School District

  • Aug. 26: The district sent a letter out to parents informing them a high school student had been diagnosed with a COVID-19 case in the school, but the case had not yet been confirmed by the state health department.
  • Sept. 8: A high school student has been diagnosed with COVID-19, but it's not yet confirmed by the state health department, according to a social media post by the school district.
  • Oct. 13: The high school will do remote learning through Oct. 16, per the district's website. Elementary and middle school classes are operating as normal, with learning accommodations. The district also canceled Friday's Cornbelt Conference championship game against Howard. The decision was made due to a "lack of player availability" resulting from "some recent COVID cases" within the Viborg-Hurley School District and the subsequent contact tracing, superintendent Brett Mellem said Tuesday morning. 

Vermillion School District:

  • Aug. 28: The district reported it had two positive cases among staff members, including one at Austin Elementary, according to emails sent to parents and obtained by the Argus leader.
  • Sept. 11: The district had four positive cases the first four weeks of school, according to an email sent out to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 14: Children may have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 during class at Vermillion High School, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 16: A student at Austin Elementary has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. 

Wagner Community School District:

  • Sept. 26:  The district has moved into phase two of its COVID-19 response plan, meaning students are on campus Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with distance learning on Wednesday, according to a statement from Superintendent Shad Storley on the district's website. The situation will be assessed as necessary.
  • Sept. 28: The district has determined too many faculty, staff and students have been deemed close contacts, have to quarantine or have tested positive and officials are suspending in-person learning until Oct. 13, according to a post on the district's website.
  • Oct. 19: The district has six active cases among staff and students and 43 people in quarantine, according to its new online tracker. The district will be in phase 2 of its learning model through Nov. 13, meaning students will be in the building for in-person learning every day except Wednesdays, which are distance learning days, according to the district's website.

Wall School District:

  • Oct. 4: Because of the number of staff with symptoms or being tested for COVID, the district closed for Oct. 5, according to a statement from the district on Facebook. The district is lacking in classroom and kitchen substitutes, the statement read. No numbers were given.

Watertown School District: 

  • Sept. 21: Watertown High School will be going to online learning for the remainder of the week because if a high number of cases and close contacts, Superintendent Jeff Danielsen said. Danielsen said that 20 positive coronavirus cases have been confirmed at the high school, 10 of which were added on Monday. Contact tracing is still being conducted, but Danielsen said there are already more than 100 close contacts being quarantined and that figure could surpass 200 based on the average number of students who have been impacted previously by positive cases.
  • Sept. 25: Watertown High School will continue online classes and has postponed/canceled all extracurricular activities through next week due to a continued high number of COVID cases (34) and close contacts (250) within the building, according to superintendent Jeff Danielsen.

West Central School District:

  • Aug. 29:  An employee at West Central Middle School and another employee at Humboldt Elementary were diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a letter and email sent to parents and staff over the weekend and obtained by the Argus Leader. 
  • Sept. 24: A high school student has tested positive, and 12 other students have been identified as close contacts, according to a staff email obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Sept. 30: A student at Humboldt Elementary has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a parent notification letter obtained by the Argus Leader.
  • Nov. 12: High school students and staff will move to virtual learning starting Nov. 16 through Thanksgiving, according to a letter  from the superintendent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader. They are expected to return by Nov. 30. The district has experienced a severe shortage of substitutes and more high school students continue to be absent for COVID-related reasons, the letter states.

Wilmot School District:

  • August (exact date is unclear): A kindergartner and a first-grader have tested positive, according to an alert sent to parents and obtained by the Argus Leader.

Yankton School District

  • Sept. 4: A positive case has been reported at Yankton High school and one has been reported at Beadle Elementary School, according to the Yankton School District's online tracker.
  • Sept. 11: There is only one positive case in the district, at Yankton High School, according to the district's online tracker.

  • Aug. 20: Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools notified parents through an email alert that a student tested positive at O'Gorman High School. School started for the campus Aug. 17.
  • Aug. 25: An email to parents and guardians confirmed a student at O'Gorman Junior High School has tested positive.
  • Aug. 27: More than 50 Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools students have been quarantined following three COVID-19 cases, according to the president of Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools.
