NM Supreme Court denies petition to release prison inmates due to COVID-19 threat
The New Mexico Supreme Court has denied the petition filed by the ACLU of New Mexico asking for early release of inmates from state corrections systems due to the COVID-19 outbreak Monday.Lalita Moskowitz, ACLU of New Mexico staff attorney released a statement saying “This is a devastating decision for incarcerated people, their families, and our communities at large. Through this petition, we sought to prevent the suffering and death that we are already witnessing — and that public health experts warned would happen — at our nation’s detention facilities across the country.”The public defender was however encouraged by the Governor's office to promise to ramp up testing inside prisons.
