Future Floating Homes: Naval Arch Students Meet the Challenge with Green Tech

Naval architecture students in Galati, Romania and Gdansk, Poland, used their technical and soft skills to compete in the final of ShipDX (Ship Design Exercise), the first naval architecture competition in Romania.GLO Marine, the organizer of the competition, looked at current industry trends to propose the theme of this year’s edition: the concept design of a highly autonomous, self-propelled floating house, with a focus on integrating green and sustainable technologies into the smart design.

Chiquita Orders Maersk Reefers

Dedicated to creating more sustainable shipping practices, the world renowned banana producer is further bolstering its fleet or Star Cool Integrated containers and adding more controlled atmosphere systems to deliver premium banana quality. The new batch of 2500 Star Cool Integrated containers from Maersk Container Industry (MCI) will be deployed in Chiquita Brands International’s (Chiquita) shipping services. Electric Boat Powered by Aluminum-air Battery

The vessel - Hydroxy 3000 - is a typical electrical lake vessel for private use by consumers. Together with Heig University, this vessel has been adapted to the new aluminum-air battery technology.

Alcoa, clean technology company Phinergy and HEIG-VD University, today debuted a zero-emissions electric demo boat powered by an aluminum-air battery at Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Alcoa and Phinergy announced earlier this year that the companies are collaborating on new materials, processes and components to commercialize the aluminum-air battery for various applications, including electric cars, electric boats and stationary energy. The aluminum-air battery used in the electric boat demonstrator contains 15kg aluminum which provides about 25 hours of additional navigation time…

Nordic American Tankers Improve Performance in Q3 2013

Nordic American Tankers Limited (NAT) report significant improvement in results in the third quarter 2013 over 2Q2013. TCE earnings were about $16,500 per day versus about $8,000 per day in the preceding quarter. Earnings per share in 3Q2013 was -$0.29, compared with -$0.48 in 2Q2013 and -$0.44 in 3Q2012. NAT's reserves including the undrawn part of the credit facility and working capital stood at $303m at the end of third quarter. he previously announced ExxonMobil agreement continues to yield benefits, reducing waiting times for our vessels even though the market is oversupplied. We continue to focus on cost efficiency - both in administration and onboard our vessels. 15 vessels were vetted (inspected by clients) during 3Q2013.
