SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) – Several law enforcement agencies in Wasatch County and Summit County attempted to stop two individuals who stole a vehicle and evaded authorities.

The multi-county incident began in Wasatch County and ended in Summit County on US-40 near mile marker two. Police say the driver attempted to avoid a tire deflating device, the driver lost control and crashed off the highway, closing the highway for several hours.

Officers report both the occupants were ejected from the vehicle after it rolled several times.

Police identified the driver as 22-year-old Charles Caster of Salt Lake City. Police say he was transported in critical condition by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake hospital. His condition is unknown.

Authorities say the passenger has been identified as 19-year-old Daisha Reynolds, of Salt Lake City, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

SNYDERVILLE, Utah (ABC4) – One person is dead and another person is in the hospital after a crash during a police pursuit through multiple Utah counties Wednesday morning.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), around 9:04 a.m., deputies received reports of a black car stolen from a parking lot in Wasatch County.

About an hour later, the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call saying a person was trying to break into the 911 caller’s car. The caller told police the suspect then got into a black vehicle in drove off.

Twenty minutes later, law enforcement were able to locate the black car on SR-113 and attempted to stop the driver.

But the car continued to travel down SR-113, forcing officers to begin a pursuit through Midway.

 “On two separate occasions the pursuit was terminated because deputies lost visual of the vehicle,” the SCSO explained in a news release.

The pursuit resumed on River Road to U.S.-40, reaching speeds in excess of 95 miles per hour.

While on U.S.-40, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper deployed a tire deflating device. The suspect then swerved off the road, crashing near mile marker 40.

Officials said there were two people inside the alleged stolen vehicle when it crashed. The passenger, an adult female, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, an adult male, was airlifted to a local hospital where his current condition is unknown.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the pursuit.

The Utah Attorney General’s Office, West Valley Police Department, and Park City Police Department are all investigating the incident.

Drivers should expect delays in the area as law enforcement continue their investigation.

Late Wednesday morning, authorities closed northbound US-40 at Silver Summit Parkway due to a crash.

Utah Highway Patrol says the crash is part of a police incident. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says it is a multi-agency critical incident.

Additional details have not yet been released but motorists are asked to avoid the area.

SNYDERVILLE, Utah (ABC4) – Part of US-40 is closed in Summit County due to a crash.

The Utah Department of Transportation says northbound US-40 is closed at Silver Summit Parkway due to a crash.

If you are traveling in the area, UDOT says to expect delays and consider using an alternate route.

UDOT traffic cameras in the area show traffic backing up along US-40 and exiting near Silver Summit Parkway. The crash is expected to be cleared around 1 p.m.
