NEC featuring biometrics-based travel concept at FTE Asia Expo 2018

NEC is showcasing its Smart, Secure and Seamless Travel concept this week at Future Travel Experience (FTE) Asia Expo 2018 in Singapore. The idea is to provide integrated identity management across the travel process by allowing passengers to authenticate their identity online or in-person using biometrics ensuring efficient flow within airports.

The NEC booth at FTE Asia Expo 2018 will showcase a series of solutions for realizing this concept including Digital Identity, Walkthrough Gates and Passenger Flow Management.

The NEC Digital Identity solution uses machine learning and NEC’s liveness detection technology to enable facial recognition-based digital ID login to web services such as online check-in and flight booking. Walkthrough Gates is an automated gate solution powered by NEC’s facial recognition AI engine NeoFace that cross-matches and authenticates passengers’ identities at immigration and boarding check-points, eliminating the need to show physical documents. The Passenger Flow Management solution analyzes passengers’ location data collected by various cameras and sensors at check-points and provides real-time insights about passenger movement throughout the airport journey.

Just last week Japan Customs placed an order with NEC for its electronic customs procedure gates featuring facial recognition, and will trial them in the customs area of Narita International, Japan’s busiest international airport.

Biometrics are among the innovations that will drive airport IT spending to $4.63B by 2023. In fact, according to research by SITA 71 percent of airlines and 77 percent of airports are planning major programs or research and development in biometric ID management. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is also planning a series of pilots where all airline security, airport, and border processes, as well as car rental access and hotel check-in will be performed with the same biometric information.
