NORTH CAROLINA — As of Monday, Harris Teeter grocery stores will offer expanded shopping hours especially for seniors, who are considered among the most at risk for the new coronavirus, the store chain announced.

Grocery stores throughout North Carolina are setting aside special hours for shoppers who may be more vulnerable during the new coronavirus pandemic. In some cases, these at-risk customers will have an hour to shop without others in the store.

Those who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are older adults and people with underlying medical conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harris Teeter’s new expanded senior shopping hours for customers 60 years old and older will run from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. beginning Monday, March 30. The hours will be in effect until further notice, the store said.

“The designated shopping hours will provide a genuine opportunity for senior shoppers to purchase what they need while practicing the CDC’s recommended social distancing guidelines,” Danna Robinson, communication manager for Harris Teeter, said in a statement.
Other changes for seniors include:

  • Pharmacies will also open at 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

  • Designated ExpressLane Online Shopping pick-up times for seniors from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Thursday. The company will also waive the $4.95 fee and offer $5 delivery (normally $10) for seniors during these times.

  • Senior shoppers are eligible for a 5 percent discount every Thursday as part of the Senior Club
