The Internet of Things has made it easy—and fairly affordable—for homeowners to keep an eye on their property from just about anywhere—we've moved way past the odd nanny-cam. Smart security systems are customizable, and you can buy them as do-it-yourself kits or full-blown setups with professional installation and monitoring.

The Why Axis Bug Even if you're not ready to commit to a dedicated security system, you can find plenty of individual devices that that let you monitor your home via your phone or tablet: indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells, motion sensors, and smart locks, among others.

So smart home security is readily available—but where is it being embraced? This graph was put together by Statista as part of its Digital Market Outlook report for 2018. "Smart home security" includes the "sale of devices and services for networked access control and management for buildings and premises," according to the report—so, both full systems and individual devices. The chart indicates the rate of security smart-home household penetration within the five countries in which it's most popular.

Smart home security is more popular in the US than anywhere else, at a household penetration rate of 18 percent. Norway comes in at a close second at 15.1 percent, followed by Denmark, Sweden, and Australia. The US also generated the most revenue for this market segment in 2018.

About Carol Mangis

Managing Editor

My first editorial job (as a nascent copy editor) was at PC Magazine. I started working here in 1997, when print was huge (as was the magazine itself), personal computers were well on the way to becoming mainstream, smartphones didn’t exist, and floppy disks were de rigueur. I worked up to Senior Editor, then left in 2010 for Consumer Reports to work for its electronics team. After spending one lost year in marketing, I happily returned to PCMag in 2016 to edit and produce the PCMag Digital Edition, which I’m still doing today, along with various other projects as they arise.
