Area briefs: Free flu shots in Winona; flu clinic in Dodge Center

Flu shots, anti-bullying events highlight activities around Southeast Minnesota.

WINONA — Getting a flu shot, the experts say, has never been more important than this year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting Wednesday, the city of Winona will offer free flu shot events through the rest of October. The flu shot program, a partnership among Winona Health, Winona County and the city, is an annual preventative health measure for residents. Individuals can either drive in or walk up to the sites, with no appointment or paperwork required.

Flu shots will be given at the following times and places:

● Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Central Fire Station, 451 E. Third St.

● Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Maplewood Community Center, 1756 Kraemer Drive.

● Wednesday, 3-7 p.m., Central Fire Station.

● Oct. 24, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Central Fire Station.

● Oct. 28, 3-7 p.m., Central Fire Station.

Flu shots available through Dodge County Public Health

DODGE CENTER — A flu clinic will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 27 at City Hall in Dodge Center.

Flu shots will cost $40 for a standard dose or $80 for one of two high-dose vaccines. Only Blue Cross/Blue Shield will be accepted for private insurance, but receipts will be provided for other insurance holders. People with Medicare Part B must bring their Medicare or Medicare Advantage card for billing.

Individuals wanting a shot at the drive-up outdoor clinic will need to wear masks in their vehicle and short-sleeved or loose-fitting shirts. Dodge County Public Health officials say they will not take appointments, but individuals planning to attend should call DCPH at (507) 635-6150 for preparation purposes. Anti-bullying event Tuesday in Austin

AUSTIN — LIFE Mower County will host a Unity Day Awareness on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. at its parking lot at 421 2nd Ave., NE in Austin with a balloon drop scheduled for 10:45 a.m.

The event is designed to take a stand against bullying and celebrate Unity Day. According to LIFE Mower County, bullying affects more than one in every five students around the country. October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Attendees are asked to wear orange, the color of Unity Day.

A short program will precede the balloon release.

MnDOT hosting virtual open house concerning Winona's Mankato Ave.

WINONA — The Minnesota Department of Transportation will host a virtual open house from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday about a planned reconstruction of Minnesota Highway 43/Mankato Avenue.

Individuals interested in participating may go to the project website at www.mankatoavereconstruction.com/share-your-ideas to register for the meeting and follow the attendance instructions.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MnDOT has temporarily postponed all in-person public meetings and events. However, public engagement remains a priority and MnDOT is offering an online option as one way to continue and maintain connections with the public. During the virtual meeting, members of the project team will highlight information about the project, including the intersection of Highway 43 and U.S. Highway 61. The project, scheduled for 2022, includes four roundabouts along the corridor.

Wohlers stepping down from People's Energy Cooperative board

ORONOCO — Ken Wohlers will step down after 18 years representing District 2 on People’s Energy Cooperative’s Board of Directors.

Wohlers, who has served as the board's secretary/treasurer for the past 13 years, announced he will not seek re-election to the board in 2021.

Coop members living in District 2 interested in serving on the nominating committee should contact Gwen Stevens at (507) 367-7015 or gstevens@peoplesrec.com no later than Nov. 13. Cooperative members living in District 2 and interested in running for the open seat in 2021 should contact the People's Energy Cooperative for more information and make their intentions known before Dec. 31.

District 2 includes the townships of Ashland, Canisteo, Frankford, Grand Meadow, Hayfield, Mantorville, Pleasant Valley, Rock Dell, Salem, Vernon, Wasioja and sections 19 through 36 of Kalmar, sections five through eight, 17 through 20 and 29 through 32 of High Forest, and sections four through 36 of Racine.
