Thurston faces several charges including theft (over $500) and theft ($500 and under).

Possession of drug paraphernalia

A Geneva police officer was in the 400 block of S. Third Street, Geneva on Nov. 3 and saw a car headed southbound with one illuminated taillight. According to police, the officer conducted a traffic stop on the car — a 2006 black Ford Fusion, and approached the driver, Julia Johnson, 23, of the 400 block of Valentine Way, Oswego.

While speaking with Johnson, police smelled burnt cannabis from inside the car and saw a green, leafy substance (suspected to be cannabis) in the center dashboard area, according to police. When asked by police if she had any cannabis and/or paraphernalia in the car, Johnson got a metal grinder from the front passenger seat and a glass smoking pipe from the center console, gave them to police, and said both were used for smoking cannabis.

Police searched the car and didn't find any other related items, before issuing Johnson a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia, and a warning for having one working taillight. Johnson was then release from the scene.

Fraud, possession of drug paraphernalia

At 9:04 p.m., on Nov. 3, a Geneva police officer saw a 2013 blue Chevrolet Malibu headed eastbound without a functioning driver's side headlight in the 400 block of Hamilton Street, Geneva, where the car then stopped, and the driver — later identified as Oscar Santin, 26, of the 500 block of Pershing Avenue, Glen Ellyn, got out of the car and walked westbound. The officer drove behind the car and turned on the squad car's emergency lights, and Satin went back and sat inside his car. According to police, the officer came up to the car and soon after informed Satin and the other passenger — later identified as 26-year-old Obed Garcia, also of the 500 block of Pershing Avenue — the reason for the traffic stop. The officer learned Satin had a suspended driver's license, and two other officers were called to the scene to assist.

According to police, Satin was arrested and searched. Garcia was then asked to get out of the car and during a search, police found a box of Marlboro cigarettes in his jacket pocket, and inside the cigarette box found a small plastic bag containing a white powdery substance of what appeared to be cocaine. Police also found a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, suspected to be cannabis, and arrested Garcia. According to police, Garcia admitted to smoking cannabis with a pipe police found on his jacket, and also admitted the white substance was cocaine.

Police searched the car and found drug paraphernalia and suspected fraudulent forms of ID. Garcia and Satin were taken to the Geneva Police Department, where Satin was cited for several traffic violations and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials from the Kane County State's Attorney's office approved two felony charges of possession of a fraudulent ID card against Garcia, and charges for possession of a controlled substance (suspected cocaine) weren't authorized as lab results are pending. Garcia was taken to the Kane County Adult Justice Center.

Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
