Officials Vote To Recommend Pot Tax In Geneva
Details on an upcoming public hearing being held on the topic of allowing recreational marijuana dispensaries in Geneva.
GENEVA – City of Geneva officials voted 9-0 Monday to recommend approval of an amendment to the city code to allow a cannabis retailers tax, according to Kane County Chronicle. During an upcoming public hearing set for Tuesday, the City of Geneva Planning and Zoning Commission will hear whether there should be a marijuana dispensary in the city, Third Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg said, according to the news report. Kane County Chronicle reported Tuesday's public hearing comes less than two months after alderman directed staff to forward the regulation of adult cannabis businesses in the city to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a recommendation, according to City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins.
Dawkins added that Jan. 1 marks the first day the tax — up to 3 percent — can be imposed in Illinois counties or municipalities. However, the tax would only go into effect if a city dispensary was approved, according to officials, Kane County Chronicle reported.
