Georgia’s confirmed case count tops 305,000; Chatham County reports one new coronavirus death

Georgia’s confirmed case count for COVID-19 rose by 2,313 since Friday to reach 305,021 on Saturday, while the statewide death toll rose by 63 to reach 6,599, according to figures posted just before 3 p.m. on Saturday by the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Of Georgia’s 27,338 confirmed COVID-19 cases in patients who were hospitalized when the case was reported to DPH or when interviewed, 135 patients included in that total were added on Saturday.

Chatham County’s coronavirus death toll rose by one on Saturday to reach 146. Chatham County’s total COVID-19 case count rose by 64 to hit 8,074 on Saturday.

The death rate in Chatham County, measured as the percentage of known cases who die from COVID-19, remained at about 1.8% on Saturday.

In Bryan County, the confirmed-case count increased by nine to reach 1,055 on Saturday, while the county’s coronavirus death toll remained at 11.

Effingham County’s death toll rose by one to reach 23 on Saturday, while the listed case count increased by 27 to reach 1,365 on Saturday.

Free COVID-19 testing is offered daily on weekdays and every other Saturday (next happening Sept. 19) at the Savannah Civic Center, where walk-ups are now welcome for the first hour; visit covid19.gachd.org for more details.

The daily DPH update includes rates of known infection in each county, expressed as the number of cases per 100,000 residents to make comparison easier. Chatham County’s infection rate on Friday was 2,763 cases per 100,000 residents, while Glynn County’s rate was 3,961 per 100,000 residents.

COVID-19 testing through the Coastal Health District is free and available to all regardless of symptoms. It takes about five minutes and results are available in about 4-5 days by phone. No appointment is needed.
