Colorado’s McLaughlin smashes Forsberg’s record at Mount Marathon

Oregon’s King becomes race’s oldest winner

The party is back on in Seward on the Fourth of July, and apparently more than just Alaska wants in.

Allie McLaughlin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Max King of Bend, Oregon, won the 94th running of the Mount Marathon Race on Monday in Seward. The race returned to its traditional July 4 date for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic and the 2021 event was moved to July 7 to keep the crowds small.

The masses were back to see non-Alaskans sweep the race of about 5 kilometers up and down the mountain of about 3,000 feet for the first time since Spain’s Kilian Jornet and Sweden’s Emelie Forsberg won in 2015.

On that day, Forsberg smashed Nancy Pease’s 1990 record of 50 minutes, 30 seconds, by running a 47:48.

It was such a steep drop in the record, accomplished by an international star of trail running, that many wondered when that record would finally fall.

The answer is 2022, when McLaughlin, a 31-year-old film producer and runner for On, would drop the record all the way to 47:09.

If her reaction to the race is any indication, plenty more runners from around the country and the globe will continue to seek the event out.

“It’s my absolute favorite right now,” she said. “I feel like it’s the most honest race ever. To be a true, gritty mountain runner, you’ve kind of got to do Mount Marathon.”

King, 42, agrees. He runs for Salomon. As a runner with a long record of success on the track, in short trail races and ultramarathons, he was asked why with so many choices for races, he chose Mount Marathon for the third time since 2018.

“This is the best one,” he said. “I love this race. It’s now like one of my favorite races of the year. And I love coming back.”

What got King up here to lower the 40- to 49-year-old age group record to 43:37 from Trond Flagstad’s 44:26 and take the record of oldest winner from Todd Boonstra’s 41-year-old triumph in 2003?

“If it didn’t have this community aspect, with all of Alaska kind of with their sights set on this weekend, it wouldn’t be what it is,” he said. “It wouldn’t be nearly as much fun.”

Pyper Dixon, 31, was born and raised in Seward and finished 17th. He’s a good example of the passion Seward has for the race — the passion that draws racers like McLaughlin and King.

Dixon said the race means so much to him he felt like he was going to pass out at the starting line.

“There’s so much weight on my shoulders, so much pressure, like nobody else cares how I do but I care so much,” he said. “I wait 365 days for this race. Everything else in my life comes second.

“And when you put that much pressure on yourself, you think about it that much and you live for this moment, it’s hard to show up and be relaxed.”

Dixon said his goal is to take a more chill approach to the race in the next couple of years, but the trail running community doesn’t appear to follow his lead anytime soon.

Women’s race

Just outside of Colorado Springs is the Incline, the remains of a former railway. The stepped trail ascends about 2,000 feet in less than a mile, topping out at 8,590 feet above sea level. It has an average steepness of 24 degrees, as compared to the 34 degrees of Mount Marathon.

The Incline is McLaughlin’s training ground, and she owns the Fastest Known Time there. It was only natural someone suggested she try Mount Marathon.

“I’ve actually wanted to do this since 2014,” McLaughlin said of Mount Marathon. “I felt like 2014, I was my best. And the last couple years, I haven’t been as strong. I actually think I’m at one of my strongest points now.”

The question going in was how McLaughlin would climb with Olympic skiers Rosie Frankowski, of Anchorage, and Novie McCabe, of the University of Utah. It turned out she could climb with everybody, men included.

McLaughlin hit the top at 34:17. Frankowski was next at 37:11. Forsberg had been at 36:17 on her record run. Only two men, with King leading the way at 32:18, were faster Monday.

After that climb, the only real question left in the women’s race was what McLaughlin’s postrace cocktail would be. (Answer: White Russian at the Flamingo Lounge.)

“I’m just happy to show I’m of this caliber,” McLaughlin said.

After winning the last two women’s races, including with a time of 51:24 last year, the initial reaction of Seward’s Hannah Lafleur to McLaughlin’s time was a word that can’t be printed.

“It’s impressive,” Lafleur said. “It sets the bar high and it’s just what competition is about. So I’m really stoked.”

Lafleur hit the top of the mountain behind five other runners, but rallied for second place at 52:35 with the fastest downhill of the race at 11:38. That downhill is the third-fastest since the times started being kept in 1989.

“I really wanted to PR and I was a minute slower than last year, but I feel like I put up a good fight,” she said, while also following her usual custom for thanking all the volunteers, fans and competitors for making the race what it is.

Palmer’s Christy Marvin finished third at 52:45 and tied with Pease for top-three finishes in the race with nine. Only Patti Foldager and Cedar Bourgeois (10) and Nina Kemppel (11) have more.

More top-25 finishers with local connections were former central peninsula resident and current Palmer resident Meg Inokuma in third at 52:51, Seward High grads Ruby Lindquist in seventh at 54:44 and Denali Strabel in 12th at 57:26, and 2006 Wings Christian Academy graduate Julianne Dickerson in 21st at 1:01:23.

Inokuma, 42, lived on the central peninsula in the summers of 2014 through 2016, but had only done the Mount Marathon trail twice until two weeks ago. In the last couple weeks, she did it three more times to cram for her race debut. She still got to the top in third place.

At the bottom, Inokuma sprinted to pass Marvin at the starting line, not realizing the finish was farther down the street.

“She passed me back,” Inokuma said. “I knew she was coming but I did my best. I don’t have any regrets.”

Also in the women’s race, Anchorage’s Ellyn Brown extended her record of consecutive finishes to 33.

Men’s race

The big question coming in was whether King had lost a step. Turns out he gained a few seconds.

In 2018, King finished second with a 42:33, the fourth-fastest time in race history. In 2019, he won at 43:39, then finished at 43:37 on Monday.

Lars Arneson, a 2009 graduate of Cook Inlet Academy who was third at 45:22, showed he meant business by staying with King in the lead group on the road to the mountain.

“It’s hard to let him go if you really want to be up there,” Arneson said after equaling his best finish in the race and lowering his PR by 1:10. “When he hit the mountain, he just had a whole different gear.”

King hit the top with 26 seconds on Anchorage’s Thomas O’Harra, a 26-year-old skier at the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center. King said he thinks he’s slowed a bit on the downhill, but he still pulled away from O’Harra by almost a minute.

“It’s amazing,” King said. “The age group record and the oldest winner. There’s so much history there. Records are made to be broken.

“I hope Todd’s happy for me. It’s one of those things where, when somebody takes it from me in the future, which they will, it’ll be awesome.”

King said he will definitely be back to race in the future, but next year he is focused on getting his 12-year-old son on the mountain.

Arneson, who thanked United Physical Therapy for all its help, reached the top of the mountain in fourth place, just two seconds behind Talkeetna’s Roman Gross. Arneson passed Gross on the road to the finish.

“I had a pretty good battle to the top with Roman, then was able to hold it together for the downhill,” Arneson said.

Other local notables in the top 25 were Anchorage’s Galen Hecht in eighth at 47:54, Seward’s Erik Johnson in 13th at 49:33 and Dixon in 17th. Johnson is the eighth runner in race history to go under 50 minutes 10 times.

Hecht, 27, lived on the central peninsula for 18 months before moving to Anchorage in January. He finished 16th last year, failing to earn automatic entry for this year, but got a bib at Sunday night’s auction for $475.

Hecht said various members of the running community pitched in to help him pay the tab, the latest example of an Alaska running community that has welcomed him with open arms.

Hecht is from Santa Fe, New Mexico. When he moved to the central peninsula from Santa Fe, two-time Mount Marathon runner-up Rickey Gates spread the word, including to Mount Marathon race director and 2009 champ Matias Saari.

Suddenly Saari was texting Hecht and asking if he wanted to run the Skyline traverse with Saari, Johnson and Brandon Newbould, the 2000 Soldotna High School graduate who set the culture for Class 4A state cross-country titles for the Stars from 1999 to 2001.

“I learned a lot on that first day, just about the running culture and the community,” Hecht said. “I can’t imagine a better place to be. It’s like the best place in the world for being in the mountains and having cool people to run with.”

Also in the men’s race, Seward’s Fred Moore extended his record of consecutive finishes to 52.

Junior race

One rivalry in the race halfway up and down the mountain ended, and another is just beginning.

Coby Marvin, an incoming sophomore at Colony, defeated Ali Papillon of Boulder, Colorado, in the boys race. Marvin’s 25:27 and Papillon’s 25:43 were the second and third fastest times in race history, behind the 24:30 of Bill Spencer in 1973.

Papillon had relegated Marvin to second place last year.

“Kind of as he put it, as long as we’re running fast, I’m happy,” Marvin said when asked to describe the rivalry. “Friendly competition.”

Marvin now has two years to try and chase down Spencer’s record time.

In the girls race, Rosie Conway, an incoming freshman at East, was first in 33:18, while Tania Boonstra, an incoming freshman at Soldotna, was second at 33:41 and Jayna Boonstra, an incoming senior at Kenai Central, was third at 34:47.

“I just really wanted to win and I really wanted to beat 34 minutes,” Conway said.

The Boonstras, the daughters of four-time men’s champ Todd Boonstra, spent most of their summer in Minnesota trying to train on ski hills there.

It worked on the uphill, with Tania getting to the top first in 23:14 and Jayna getting up second in 23:47. But Conway, who turned at 24:20, passed both on the downhill, getting by Tania for good on the road.
