DETROIT, MI -- Rockers KISS and Def Leppard made it official Monday afternoon with an announcement they'll embark on a summer tour that includes a stop in Metro Detroit.

The Associated Press reported before a 2 p.m. announcement from the bands that they'll embark on a U.S. tour June 23 in West Valley City, Utah. and play more than 40 dates, including Los Angeles; Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; Atlanta; and Tampa, Fla. The tour wraps Aug. 31 in Woodlands, Texas.

Both bands, according to Live Nation's website, are scheduled to perform Aug. 23 at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston.

Tickets go on sale Friday; prices are TBD.

"You have two bands who to one degree or another have stood the test of time and put them together and you'll have a great night of music," KISS frontman Paul Stanley told the AP. "We're living in a time now where everyone wants more for their money, and that's understandable.

"So, when you can get two bands to collaborate together, we couldn't pick a better band for this tour than Def Leppard to go out with us."

Comments from Def Leppard's Joe Elliott in the AP story:

"We're not jam bands either of us," Elliott said "It's very theatrical what Kiss does to a lesser extent obviously 'cause we don't do the makeup thing, our show runs like a military operation for sure.

"It's not like the Grateful Dead and Phish touring or something."

Kiss and Def Leppard, according to the AP, are partnering with various military companies for the tour to support U.S. troops, including the United Service Organizations Inc. and Hiring Our Heroes.

The tour announcement comes just weeks before the original members of KISS will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10 in New York City. This is the band's 40th anniversary.

KISS's last in Metro Detroit was Sept. 6, 2012 at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, part of a tour stop with Motley Crue.

The group paid tribute to the area years ago with its hit song "Detroit Rock City" and appears to love performing here.

Def Leppard is no stranger to the region either.

That group's last show in Metro Detroit was also at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston - a July 7 tour stop with Poison.
