Media outlets reported that the driver pulled over to protect the other passengers on the bus, which was headed from Miami to New York. Greyhound spokeswoman Crystal Booker was unable to say where Kyles boarded, according to the Richmond-Times Dispatch.

"For the safety of the other passengers, the driver pulled off onto the right shoulder and opened the door,” Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told WTVR. “The man exited the bus, ran towards the back of it and then into the northbound travel lane.”

Kyles was reportedly run over by several vehicles, including a semitrailer.. A police chaplain was then brought aboard to assist traumatized passengers, according to WTVR.

The 49 people were eventually loaded onto a second bus with a new driver, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s incident,” Booker said. “We will continue to support the authorities on this matter."
