Cedar Bluff, AL – An area mother and her son helped produce a book on Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a disability often characterized by impulsivity, inattention, disorganization and sometimes, hyperactivity. It affects individuals throughout their lives, making life more challenging for individuals from childhood through adulthood. This is particularly true for teens who are already struggling with the transition into adolescence. Their ADD or ADHD impacts their lives in many areas – from social interactions and school to friends, family and the day-to-day aspects of life.

A Bird’s-Eye View of Life with ADD and ADHD: Advice from Young Survivors is described as a survival guide written by teens, for teens.

Author and LaFayette, GA native Chris Abney Zeigler Dendy teamed up with her son, Alex Zeigler, to discuss the strategies they utilized while addressing their own personal challenges with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Chris Dendy earlier wrote Teenagers with ADD, which sold over 60,000 copies. More recently she produced two videotapes: Father to Father: the ADD Experience and Teen to Teen.

The new book "offers factual information in words and examples that teenagers can easily identify with and understand. Written with humor and compassion, this book offers practical strategies for coping with this challenging condition from the real experts themselves."

Officials said, "A Bird’s-Eye View of Life with ADD & ADHD was written by twelve teens and a young adult who are living with this challenging condition. These young people offer the best kind of advice—advice based upon first-hand experience. This book offers factual information and practical strategies in words and examples that young people can easily understand and put into practice. It also leaves teens and their families with a sense of hope that they too will survive this sometimes overwhelming disorder.

"Among the topics covered are: disorganization, inattention, forgetfulness, impulsivity, writing problems, procrastination, sleeping problems, emotional issues, memorization, writing, treatment and medication, advocacy, and hyperactivity."

Chris Dendy is a popular national and international speaker on ADD and ADHD. She has done training locally for several groups including Chattanooga area CHADD, Baylor School in Chattanooga and Walker County DFCS.

She said, “Even though I am a former teacher, school psychologist and counselor, parenting a son with ADD was the toughest and most humbling challenge of my whole life. Alex and I wrote this book to help other families learn from and avoid our mistakes.”

An active advocate, Ms. Dendy serves as Treasurer of CHADD, the leading national organization serving children, adults, and families with attention deficit disorder.

A native of LaFayette, Georgia, Ms. Dendy is the sister of Dr. Billie Abney of LaFayette and is the daughter of Lillian Abney and the late Judge W. L. Abney, long-time Probate Judge for Walker County and former Georgia legislator.
