Over 3,000 members of UConn’s freshman class began arriving Friday morning with help from older students and staff, including new UConn President Thomas C. Katsouleas.
“Starstruck!” said a group of UConn students after managing to get a group photo with Katsouleas in the campus parking lot. “Let me know if you want a tour,” offered another undergrad in passing. “I may take you up on that,” Katsouleas said.
“This is too funny,” said Annie Sherbacow, 17, as Katsouleas reached out to carry her fish Charlie. She plans on studying actuarial science and finance. Sherbacow is one of about 5,450 freshman in UConn’s class of 2023. Over 75 percent of the class are Connecticut residents, representing 162 of the state’s 169 towns and cities.
“In some sense, it’s both our first days,” Katsouleas said. “Everyone’s a little excited, a little nervous, but I think people are finding that this is a very welcoming place. That’s why I’m here, to send that signal. We’re here for them.” Move-in day was Katsouleas’ first chance to interact with most undergraduates directly.
Katsouleas said he was looking forward to the freshman welcome ceremony Friday, getting to know the UConn community better, and watching the Huskies compete for championships.
