Celebrate Independence Day at San Gabriel with a parade, 9 a.m. July 4, and followed by a free Kids’ Day event, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Smith Park. Kids’ Day includes  games, community booths, live entertainment, a free swim session and food trucks. Free admission to Kids’ Day. Also at Kids’ Day, an “Honor Wall’ will also honor members of the Armed Forces and showcase current and past troops who are residents of San Gabriel. Parade route: Plaza Park (428 S. Volunteer reading tutors needed: The Whittier Area Literacy Council invites community members to volunteer to tutor children who are behind in reading skills.
