Vermont State Police have released more information regarding the fatal shooting of an East Hardwick man.

Police say the series of events that lead to the shooting began around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Hardwick Convenience and Deli store on Vermont Rt 15. The Hardwick Police Department was called after Robert Chaplin, 27, was denied to purchase alcohol because he was deemed too intoxicated. Daryl Johnson, 48, then attempted to intervene between the store clerk and Chaplin.

Chaplin had left the store before police arrived.

Police say about 90 minutes after the incident, Chaplin arrived at the residence of Johnson, where an altercation started. During the altercation, police say Johnson fired a handgun that hit Chaplin.

Chaplin was transported to Copley Hospital, where he was then pronounce dead. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington has determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the arm and chest.
