DANVILLE – An attempted robbery Tuesday in Danville culminated in a shootout between the suspects and a witness, police said.

Gunshots were reported just before 5:50 p.m. on Hartford Road between Rutherford Drive and Camino Amigo, according to the Danville Police Department.

Police said several suspects armed with handguns tried to rob four residents who had just parked their vehicle on the 200 block of Hartford Road, a residential area. The suspects and a neighbor who witnessed the attempted robbery exchanged gunfire, according to police.

No one was hit by the gunfire and the suspects left the area in their vehicle, police said.

Police did not have any additional details Wednesday. They did not say whether they’d identified the suspects.

The 200 block of Hartford Road remained closed Tuesday night while authorities investigated the incident.
