CAMPO, Calif. — A husband and wife watched helplessly Thursday as a fire destroyed their Campo home of over two decades.

Ken and Diane Alkire told FOX 5 they were sitting in their living room when the blaze started outside their house near state Route 94 and La Posta Road, quickly engulfing the home.

“I ran outside to grab a hose, told her to call 911 and when I got out there, the whole corner of the house was involved,” Ken said.

Meanwhile, Diane urgently tried to call him away from the flames.

“I’m yelling, ‘get away from the fire!’ I’m going out the back door, the windows are blowing in.”

Ken suffered minor burns to his feet and arms but was otherwise unhurt. The couple’s two service dogs also escaped the fire unscathed.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the couple’s priceless family pictures.

“When her mom passed away, all the family pictures from her mom, my family pictures from my side of the family, our family pictures of the kids growing up, everything,” said Ken.

Also lost to the flames were pictures of the couple’s daughter who passed away 19 years ago.

It came as a huge hit for the couple, who say they’ve faced their fair share of financial woes due to health issues tied to Ken’s time as a contractor in Afghanistan. They told FOX 5 they struggled to hold on to the house, which they lived in for 26 years. Then, in one day, it all burned before their eyes.

“It can be replaced,” Ken said of the house. “There’s a lot of keepsakes and a lot of memorabilia that’s gone forever.”

Family members have set up a GoFundMe to help the Alkires get back on their feet.
