West Oakland County COVID-19 tracking: Milford in the lead, 20-to-29 set moves past elders

September’s COVID-19 pace was much slower than August’s, but Milford is closing out the month with the highest increase rate for the past week.

According to Hometown Life’s Tuesday-to-Tuesday analysis of Oakland County data, Milford’s confirmed coronavirus case count so far is 133 - 9% higher than on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Novi experienced the next highest uptick of almost 5%. The remaining communities in Hometown Life’s Oakland County region stayed below that marker.

For the month of September, Highland Township had the speediest growth rate of about 30%. In August, Milford’s cases grew by approximately 65%. Yet, before the alarms start ringing, both communities so far have experienced less than 140 cases each.

Hometown Life counted 18 deaths for the month in its Oakland County territory – five in the Farmington-Farmington Hills region, four in West Bloomfield, three in the Bloomfield-Birmingham region, three in Novi, two for the Walled Lake, Wixom and Commerce Township area and one for the Lyon Township – South Lyon area.

Across Oakland County, there were 16,680 cases on Tuesday. Deaths totaled 1,144, and recoveries numbered 13,640. A major shift happened countywide in recent days, leading to Tuesday when the 20-to-29 age group accounted for more cases so far than the 50-to-59 grouping.

The younger set led with 2,582 cases, or two more than their elders.  

The state of Michigan counted 123,633 cases of COVID-19 and 6,751 deaths. The state also reported 13,187 probable cases and 321 probable deaths.
