This article is more than 3 years old.

Although travel is still a bit on hold for many these days, those who are venturing out are finding the hospitality landscape looks a bit different these days. Not to mention everyone is a bit on edge. That's why, more than ever, it's essential to create a sense of comfort when hitting the road. And no one believes in that more than Ariel Kaye founder and CEO of bedding and linen company Parachute.

The businesswoman recently published her first book, "How to Make a House a Home," throughout which she puts pen to paper on her comfort ethos. Her philosophy is about how mindful design decisions can enhance overall wellbeing. In it, there's a section in the book about how to be comfortable on-the-go. Kaye's philosophy centers around comfort "anchors" to help instantly be in a better mood and more productive. And given the stressful time we live, these tips can help make your next trip a little more relaxing.

Here she reveals the mistakes people make that can lead to a more tense travel experience and the secrets to traveling comfortably.

Q: What are your top comfortable essentials?

A: Since travel is mostly happening by car these days, my essentials are much broader than what I would normally pack when traveling by plane. A bathrobe and pillow are now a must along with my favorite snacks and teas.

Q: What's the biggest mistake people make when packing?

A: I think most people overpack – myself included. I'm notorious for bringing five hats to Palm Springs and wearing none of them.

Q: What's the key to comfortable packing?

A: When packing, I like to think about my outfits ahead of time. It helps to take the guesswork out of what I will be wearing day-today, and I also end up packing less. I find I usually end up wearing the same few things on vacation anyways, so less is more!

Q: Why is comfortable packing so important?

A: Packing items that make you feel comfortable to serve as anchors during your travel. For me, having these items near puts me in a better mood and ultimately makes me more productive. No matter where you are, surrounding yourself with warmth and comfort is crucial to your overall happiness.

Q: What are your top tips when it comes to comfortable packing?

A: When you travel, you can keep it minimal while still indulging in luxuries that make you feel at home. Think about your priorities while traveling. Do you want to get good sleep? If so, bring your favorite pillow and pillowcase. Are you looking to relax and unwind? If the answer is yes, find a travel-size bottle of bath oil and a candle to create your own oasis. Do you feel your best when you move your body? I know I do and never leave home without my exercise clothes and sneakers. Having these comfort items close will make you feel more at ease and your trip that much better.
